Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Help me decide: which frame?

Ok, so here's the deal. I found this guy with two frames for sale, both would be perfect for a conversion. The first is a classic Alan aluminum and the second a beautiful Concorde Aquila.

They are both great. You are one lucky man.

2nd this. Just don't trust the durability of ALU and when it goes, it just goes with very little warning. Plus bonded/glued frames make doubly nervous.

i've an old alan like that one. It's light and easy riding but not very stiff. If I ever converted it, I'd leave the front brake on.

Concorde.

I've had a bonded aluminum frame like that Alan, mine was a Vitus, it was a noodle bike. If you weigh any more than 150lbs don't go near that Alan. Sure, they're amazingly light, but if you're going to ride it daily or even weekly, I'd stick with steel. Those were made before the switch to oversized tubing for aluminum bikes, so besides the obvious flaw of the joints being glued, you also have weaker aluminum tubing. Like I said, noodle bike....
