Strictly appearance. My mind associates gumwalls with lugged steel, or more "traditional" bikes. You know, level top tube, blah blah blah, old school. Maybe it's just me.
It kinda makes me smile that it bothers people so much. :D |
Gumwall everything.

Honestly they go with anything.
I was at a larger performance bike store the other day and despite the rare sight of a DA 9000 equipped fuji's, the first thing to catch my eye were the clearance late-model charge MTBs with gumwalls.

It's not just you. Same way here, and then I see them on a TT bike or aggressive road bike and I am like wtf?

Yeah, to me it's like tennis shoes with slacks, or cowboy boots with shorts. It's just "off" to me. Emphasis on to me.

Well I am definitely not the first person to do this, nor will I be the last. It's more common than you may think.
It kinda makes me smile that it bothers people so much. :D And the fact that it's very common just means LOTS of people are doing it wrong! :p Just kiddin. |

Like whitewalls on a Ferrari. Oy.
Bikes are different though :) |
I guess this dead horse will continue to be beaten forever and ever and ever.

Now to me, skin walls carry a completely different attitude and style than gumwalls. Like entirely different species.
But yeah I've been using both terms too loosely together. Come to think of it, given a choice I'd go with skinwalls over gumwalls any day. Less cracking. I.e. corsas/ veloflex yellowing vs paselas drying out and cracking. |

It doesn't bother me, it's your bike, enjoy. I just notice it because it jumps out at me. The same thing would happen to me if you had a Brooks leather saddle on there.

I actually have a pair of cycling shoes that are made to look like tennis shoes and they do have a gumwall sole.

I have a set of Vittoria Open Corsas on ice for races and pictures because they look good and are much more supple than my contis. No flat protection though, so I don't run them as my daily. Also have a set of the newer corsas with graphene sitting around but they don't look as good as the older corsas.

Sick CAAD. Gumwall all of the things.

Franswa is not a stupid whiteman

For me, I think it goes back to my youth when they were very common, and I saw a lot of bikes with badly weathered tires. In my mind, I associate gumwalls with dry, rotten, cracked rubber. According to Sheldon Brown, ozone is what makes the rubber deteriorate. He claims that storing tires near a big electric motor (such as in a furnace) exposes them to elevated levels of ozone, and they crack sooner than they otherwise would. Whatever the cause, I don't care for those tires in any condition. |
