They may be Nerds, but they aren't sissies. Elbowing, shouldering, kneeing, bar bashing, and deliberate nerfing are part of the game. They beat the snot out of each other, as it should.

Brakeless and with freewheels! Looks like fun. Reminds me of short-track speed skating.

Leave it to the British to race something never intended to be raced.

I think they invented sailboat racing too.

I don't know. I don't follow the sport.

Some of the vids on youtube are great. It's like rugby. The just smash into each other to gain any advantage.

It must be awkward as hell to make such tight corners with those handle bars.

The Little 500, but those bikes have coaster brakes and I don't think it's on dirt.

Bikes: Not As Many As I'd Like

One of my good friends raced the little 500 last year. Really weird, there are standard issue bikes for all riders and teams and everything. 46x18 single speed coaster brake.

Do you say that because of the angle, width, height, all of the above? I'm curious.

To me it looks like accelerating hard would be pain with the bars so close. No leverage.

For the same reason you say hard acceleration would be a pain. No leverage. The hands are too close to the body and not positioned well to manage the amount of counter-steering they do. But hey, that's what makes it a wonky sport.

Agreed. It seems like a wider, straighter MTB bar would be better. Especially because it would place their elbows out more, and they seem to like using their elbows. Maybe their is a rule dictating types.

This is weird. I checked the rules and handle bar width can not exceed 790mm (31"), which is jumbo. But it's obvious in the vids that the guys aren't running anywhere near that. Not even close. So I looked at some UK "How to get started" blogs and found this.

Exactly the opposite of what you and I thought, for both issues. Color me confused.

Handlebars Personal preference plays a part here but a tight wrap-around 'Canadian Benz' style is the basic design favoured by virtually every rider. In the fifties wide 'Cow-Horn' bars were the thing. They were great for helping keep opponents behind you, but not the best for gating and tight cornering.
Edit: First source was wrong. I found the official British rules. 550mm. There is the answer.

Found a cool image. This is exactly what appeals to me about this. Reminds me of my childhood racing Stingrays where we would do anything to get past an opponent or to keep him behind us.

Dirty, like hockey.

The wheelie kid has the Gerry Lopez (legendary Pipeline surfer) style. His posture is sooooo "casually deliberate". Rad.

This one should really make you happy. A nicely crossed up wheelie.

Check out the "facility. Really pretty area.
