Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Question about gear ratios

I am building a SS soma wolverine up for my gravel grinder/cx setup. The crank I currently have is a truvativ noir with a 104 bcd. I was planning on running a 46x18 but I am having a hard time finding a 46t chainring with 104 bcd. How much of a difference would it make if I changed to a 42x16?

Larger gears wear slower than small ones, but it shouldn't be an issue if you maintain your bike.

46x18
+Bit easier acceleration (lower ratio)
+Bit chain run smoother (larger rear sprocket)

42x16
+A little top end speed (higher ratio)
+A little Lighter weight (smaller front and rear)

Anything else I miss? its should be no different but at this range, I prefer 46x18 if you ask me
