Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

2 quick questions

1. Has anyone had any luck ordering items from chucksbikes.com? I am always a little learly b-4 ordering something online--just want to make sure its legit.

2. brakes: as i just got my first fixed gear-- i will be installing a front brake (i know--blashphemy you say). I am going to be ordering a set of bullhonrs (see question 1) and would like people's opinions on whether it is better to have an aero brake lever on the end of the bullhorns or a cheapo backup lever on the top of the bar. What are the advantages/disadvantages to either?

Thanks much.

Bikes: custom Moyer track bike, '94 Bianchi track bike, 99ish Bianchi Reparto Corsa 9speed record/chorus, '81ish Koga Miyata FullPro, '84 trek 720 touring bike, mid-80s Montagner slowly being built w/period campy

i ordered a pair of bullhorns from CB almost a year ago. fast delivery, no complaints.

i think the second question depends on how you ride. do you spend more time stretched out or on the top of the bar? the last time i ran a brake it was bar-end, and i liked the feel quite a bit.

chucks bike is kosher. I think everyone and their mother has a set of bullhorns from them.

I originally had my lever mounted at the end of the bullhorn but as I found I wasn't using the lever as often as time went by I remounted a CX lever closer to the stem instead. Setup looks much cleaner too...

Thanks

ok-- 1 more dumb question---cb had some bullhorns that are 35 cm and some that are 40 cm---Does the sizing affect the compatability with the stem? In other words, do some stems only take certain sized bars?

The measurement you speak of is width, probably center to center at the tips.

Stem compatability = 26.0MM road, 25.4 MTB, etc.....

I ordered from Chucks last year and got a great deal, really fast shipping.

I have a bar end lever on my drop bars and it doesn't pull very much cable. Regular brake levers are much better, expecially aero levers.

put the lever by your stem, it will look much nicer. you're only going to be using the ends of your bulls for skipping and climbing.
