So I told a friend that I'd convert a beater bike from ten-speed to ss. I'm planning on just redishing the rear hub and throwing on a BMX freewheel. I'm just wondering, though, if I do this, if it will be more efficient to first true the wheel, then redish, or if I should first redish? I've never done either, so any thoughts input er welcomed. (Is this going to take me forever the first time?)


Alternatively, if I get frustrated, how much will a shop charge to do the wheel? (NYC prices if you live here.)

If the wheel is true, I would try to redish without taking it too much out of true, i.e. loosen all the spokes on one side by x turns first, then tighten all the spokes on the other side by x turns.

If the wheel is out of true, I would redish first, then true up, but still use the same redish method as above.

I did this for the first time a month or so ago. Took me an hour using the frame & brakes as my truing stand. Pretty easy if you take your time, actually.
