ok, so I'm building up a single speed road bike, and I've got a fixed gear. the fixed has the base line IRO wheels, which are awesome and are holding up damned well for having a 270 lb person skid stopping on them.

I need a rear wheel for the single speed. Two options:

1. but a wheel for the single speed, would probably be an IRO, although I would like a flip flop free/free rear hub, I can do with out it.

2. buy a new wheel/set for the fixed, and put the IRO's on the single speed. Would be a great time to upgrade my wheels.

so what would you do? if you went for an upgrade, what would you upgrade to?

also while I have your attention, know of anyplace I can get red brake cable housing?

I don't understand. How are you homeless yet have internet access? Are you homeless with a laptop and bum free internet from coffee shops?

to a double fixed phil laced to mavic open pro rim

you could just use an old freewheel hub for the singlespeed. no real need to have a track hub.

You can use a freewheel on a hub designed for a fixed gear so if you want two freewheels your current fixed gear wheel is fine.
If I was going to upgrade over the IRO wheelset I would probably go way up level to the Phil or Level Hub, and I'm partial to the Velocity Deep-V rim. But I'd probably stick to the IRO wheel or get an old freewheel hub for my SS.

If you just want a wheel for a SS- buy/scrounge any old thread-on freewheel wheelset and you are good to go with a little DIY. You can find high-end obsolete stuff for next to nothing.

Yeah they make a adapter to do that, you remove the freehub. They are talking about a freewheel not a freehub though. Which the cassette just screws on. So pick up a old 5-6-7 speed wheelset for cheap.. remove the freewheel screw on cog and you'll be set.. of course there is the spacing etc..

i have a set of Mavic GP4 tubular rims, on sunshine hubs with grease guards, that i will give to you if you pay the shipping. they have a threaded rear hub that will hold a singlespeed freewheel. you'll have to re-dish.

Harris definitely has red housing, not expensive, and purchase-able by the foot.

so I went digging around in the barn and found an old suze sealed bmx hub, 48 holes...

so I guess my next step is replacing the 140mm axel with a 170mm, and getting spacers to knock it out to a 130mm as opposed to it's current 100mm.

then I'll need a 48 hole rim, I know that velocity deep v's come in 48 hole, but they're like $58. I hate to be a whiner, but if I'm gonna drop 58 on a rim, then $21 on spokes, and $6 on nipples, I'm up to $85 before shipping, then I gotta build the damn thing. It would be quicker and almost the same price to buy a wheel from IRO.

So if anyone knows of a 48 hole rim for around $30 that would be rad...

weed eater, thanks for the offer, I took a look at the gp4's and the sunshine hub, and I don't think it'll match this build up (I'm picky about color matching and aestetics). Thanks again though!

ps, I got some red housing from my LBS, I didn't know people were still doing colored housing. I thought everyone went over to the standard black.

How about lacing it up to a 24 hole rim instead.. You could use a sun Venus Rim...

You could use a 36h rim and skip every third hole.

after discussing it with my dad (used to be a mechanic for a bike shop, worked as a mechanic at a few mtb races) I've decided to just buy a new wheel from iro. for what I was gonna pay for spokes, nipples, a rim, and not to mention my time in lacing the wheel, I can get a solid wheel with cartidge bearings (as opposed to the loose ball in the suze hub). maybe some day when I've got a spare rim and spokes laying around I'll lace it up, but for now, an IRO will be the winner.

oddsandendos is out of the sun venus and i guess they're not getting any more. i ordered a pair and they replaced them with velocity fusions. a good substitute, not exactly what i was going for, but i think i came out ahead in any case. good folks over there. spokes are cheaper from them than from anywhere else I know of.

edit: i should note they asked me before substituting! alex was very helpful and communicative.
