Obviously you've never been above the 160s in Manhattan or took a visit to the Bronx.

in brooklyn there are a few hills, and there are DEFINATELY hills in upper manhattan so depending on the route the ride takes there, there could be some a couple pretty serious hills. this ride also hits like 5 bridges i think.

edit: haha yeah, yoshi knows what i'm talking about.

if i do it, it'll be 48x16

dirty cookie 07-27-05 03:56 PM

yoshi, come on.

let me re-phrase it to this. there isnt anything you cant push through.

noumena9 07-27-05 07:15 PM

the Queens, it has the hills. as well.

I did this ride on a 48x15 last year and it didn't kill me, so take that for what it's worth. There are a lot of rolling hills in Queens and some not so rolling ones as well near the Unisphere. As I remember there were three killer steep and long hills (nothing like River Road going to Nyack though :) )

neuron 07-27-05 09:29 PM

fwiw. i'm pushing ~80gi on my current ride, and i'd probably drop it to something mid seventies on this century.

if the cue sheets are similar to last year, hills are spaced nicely. though i bailed before going into the bronx, land of the hills -- i was cool with that -- i would have ridden ~125-30 miles total that day, (bk->cp-century->cp->bk). at least that was my estimation.

it was damn hot last year with the mess bag. i think i'd want to get a small capacity saddle bag for tools, etc.

Cadd 07-27-05 09:34 PM

I will be a marshal this year for the 75 mile ride.

akky 07-28-05 07:07 AM

If you are looking to do a century with hills: Escape from NY

Looks like we can do a century every weekend on Sept.

hella 09-01-05 12:21 PM

So.... I'll be there. Who's going?

nine 09-02-05 12:26 PM

i'm doing the 75, i'll be there at 6:30. Am i the only wuss not doing the full tour?

roscoenyc57 09-04-05 07:45 AM

Those are speed bumps...

Cadd 09-04-05 10:27 AM

I'll be there next weekend. I'll be there around 6:30 for the 75 mile ride. I'll be one of the marshals. To be honest, you don't even have to pay for this ride. It's done on public roads and you're riding with traffic.

It's not like the 5 Boro Bike Tour where they close off the highways to allow you to ride.

nope, but it doesn't matter since you can pick it up at the start point.

jrowe 09-06-05 10:30 AM

I'm coming down from Boston on Saturday, and DC_Emily is coming up from DC. We're going to ride with FixedNotBroken. It would be cool to meet up with some more forum people for the ride.

hella 09-06-05 07:32 PM

Could someone who's done this before or knows the starting point area well decide on a spot for all of us to meet up?

pista_chica 09-06-05 07:55 PM

starts on the northern side of the park, equivalent to 110th street.

on the west side:

you can meet at the hungarian coffee shop on 111th/amsterdam (don't know if they open that early though). there's a bodega on the corner 100th/manhattan which should be open for h20, gatorade etc. to pack up for the ride (manhattan ave is one block west of central park west and starts on 100th street). if you really wanna have breakfast, tom's diner is on 112th/broadway, they're 24 hrs.

on the east side:

you'll find me at dunkin donuts on 97th and madison, caffeine, sugar, carbs...perfect for a century.

oh and for after the ride, mamie's spoonbread too on 110th/columbus. honey fried chicken, mashed potatoes, collards and a nice cold root beer.

enjoy the ride.

evanyc 09-06-05 10:32 PM

craaaaaaaap. so yeah, after my fall/high speed car chase last month i took 4 weeks off from riding and fell outta shape a bit. after many x-rays and an MRI i was told i just had a bruised bone, so i've been riding this week. i'm getting back in the swing pretty quickly, but i did a 20 mile yesterday and my injured palm/wrist was killing me. don't think there's any way i could do the century :(

ch0mb0 09-07-05 11:12 PM

so who's doing this thing? has anyone registered recently?
FNB, where/when you gonna be there? I will keep an eye out for you.

jayrooney 09-09-05 08:56 AM

i haven't registered and after reading this:

I'd like to check it out. Pista Chica called out a few meeting spots.
Can we set one meeting spot for the bikeforums/fixed riders to meet?

FixednotBroken 09-09-05 09:24 AM

i registered - i like tranportation alternatives, so they receive my full support.

regardless, chombo or anyone else - jrowedc is staying at my place, and we'll be riding, so PM me for a cell #, or let's just organize a time & place.

we might try and check out deathrace 2005 on saturday... anyone else?

Cadd 09-09-05 05:06 PM

Ray, just so you know, you will NOT be able to get food & drinks at rest areas and bike mechanics will NOT help you if you encounter problems along the way without a bib.

akky 09-10-05 08:04 AM

Do we have a plan for a meeting spot? Will I be able to register in the morning?

FixednotBroken 09-10-05 08:22 AM

akky, i think just about everything you need to know is here. day-of registration does not look to be a problem, it's just $5 more.

i'm meeting jrowedc in a couple of hours, and if someone hasn't posted a meeting spot by tonight, we'll figure one out. look to see a bunch of y'all whom i haven't seen in a loooong time, and some new faces too. weather's looking good.

sashae 09-10-05 08:51 AM

Blegh. Bent the rear axle on my fix on Friday, and don't have a spare wheel yet... if I do this, I'd be on my roadie... are we shunning gears? :)

roscoenyc57 09-10-05 12:30 PM

Are you guys gonna start with the 100 mile group at 6am?

I've done the ride before and since I live downtown I usually just jump on at 9th and Broadway. I'd look for you guys if I knew when you were starting.

thanks,
E/Roscoe
