that you can do for free solo. Sort of like paying to ride Prospect Park over the weekend, I suppose. It's all in the marketing. as with walks and runs like help the homeless or race for the cure, you're not paying for the ride (/run/walk) you're making a donation, and then riding with a bunch of people who've also made the donation. |
registered for the ride and a TA member

I'll be on a pearl white bike with a Spinergy Rev-X carbon fiber rear wheel. I'll be wearing a bianchi jersey and looking really tired.
|
right then. so jrowedc, DC_Emily & others will be at the start picking up our bibs at 6 am. we'll wait across the street (110th) until 6:30 am, and then be on our way. PM me if ya want a cell #.
(i'm riding a blue cesare, and jrowedc has a white kalavinka) |
FNB I have your cell #, I'll meet you guys in the morning. I'll be in the Celeste pista concept.

i rode this fixed, along with my friend, also on fixie.
i overheard using being pointed out about 50 times - "look, that's one of those bikes that doesn't coast and has no brakes" i spotted maybe only 5-6 other fixies including a langster, an old merckx, a white IRO, black no-name wrapped in tape on the ground at PP, and a tour marshall on a neon-green lugged frame of some sort, maybe either a coast or a johnny cycles. i was riding my blue pinarello track frame (with no decals, but quite bling chrome rear and wheels) and my friend was on his schwinn conversion. perhaps you saw me throwing up in spectacular fashion at the prospect park rest stop :) due a pretty gnarly case of food poisoning that made me bail when the ride got back up to greenpoint. |
I did the whole thing today fixed. I saw a few other bikes.. A guy from Atlanta on a Pista, a marshall w a Yellow Spicer, also saw a guy with an Olmo that was sporting a fender...?
|
I rode it fixed today also. Mostly rode it alone and enjoyed seeing parts of NYC that I have never seen. I bailed after the Astoria rest stop. I wish I had run different gearing since I probably would have bailed at Kissena and stayed for the Count Trackula event.
Btw, I have never heard so many squeaking drivetrains and gear slamming shifting in my whole life. |
i did 75, but the only other fixie i saw was yoshi, who i rode with most of the way. i got three flats, and had a bad experience with one of the marshals who i asked to help at one point. he told me, "cyclists should be self sufficient" and i said, "fine don't help me". to which he replied, "no, I'll help but it doesn't mean I won't give my opinion". kind of strange for a ride that's supposed to be about community cycling. sorry i missed the bronx. next year.

i signed up for the 100 mile, but I also bailed after astoria park. Saw a lot of fixies in line to register, only saw about 5-6 on the ride. i had lots of people asking about the bike, got the "hey somebody stole your brakes" line from a few people, or would overhear people saying "see, those bikes don't have brakes". it was a great ride, the parks were great. sorry that i missed the bronx, but i wasn't up to do those hills with 48x16.

I had a good experience with the marshal who helped me with my flat. He was patient and admitted that he really didn't know all that much about some aspects of fixing. He learned a few things in the process, and he was helpful. Are you sure he wasn't kidding around? |

I had a lot of fun, I did the 100 on a SS Mountainbike.
I thought the fixed gear riders were having a lot of fun. You all have inspired me to purchase I fixie for my next bike. |
i saw a guy fail to unclip coming up to the bib line and roll all the way over on his back while still trying to unclip, jiggling his bike around above his head. he was kind of embarrassed because 100 or so of us were just standing there watching him, and then some guy rolls up and says "don't worry, it happens to the best of us," and he says "yeah, well, I'm not the best of us."
|
I was a marshal. I fixed 3 flats :)
I was in the corner fixing a flat when I heard "thumb, crash, clink clink......HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA" I looked up to see a guy in a nice Trek on the floor with both feet still clipped in. Apparently, he was watching my situation while he was trying to stop behind a car in the stop sign. (I guess he was curious since he saw 3 bikes lying on the the floor with 2 marshals around.....not knowing if we were helping with a flat or filling out an accident report). Then all his friends BUSTED OUT LAUGHING!!! Man, how messed up was that! His face turn all red! I still heard them cracking jokes about him when they were going up the next block. |
Thanks for a great time everyone. We rode in a pack and 3 of us finished.
The course wasn't too bad. Riding this solo might have bored me to the point of dropping out, even though there was a lot of NY scenery discovered on this ride. But riding with a group is inspiring. Saw maybe 6 other unknown FG riders throughout the ride as well. DC was in the house and the Force was strong with each of them. Alex, I owe you a buck for the one that's currently sitting in my tire! Good call, thanks much. I was glad to see many of my local peeps too, on the ride and at Kissena. Let's all do the next big one. |
Decided last minute to ride my fixed. Rode with nine for most of it but lost him after the triboro (I didn't realize at the time he was doing 75). Got a lot of comments, mostly "Holy s**t!" or "That's hardcore."
I only saw about five other fixed gears the whole time. And right now my left wrist is killing me. |
The ride was great guys, thanks much!! Great way to see NY. Big thanks to FixedNotBroken for playing tour guide on Saturday.
How are your knees holding up, guys? Mine hurt and I was geared!! |
Just start preparing for when you do that kinda ride fixed! You will enjoy it.
I woke up with very pained thighs, the knees held up. Gonna let the bike rest for a day :D put it thru hell this weekend.. |
nice to see all of you - putting faces & personalities to names, as jrowedc pointed out, is always interesting.
jrowe & i stayed at the velodrome to catch the racing. rode home with some of the other nyc regulars... i think we ended up with about 80 miles. enough for me, the way i was feeling. it was altogether a great day for bikes - just made me wanna throws my hands up in the 'victory!' salute every couple miles. yeah, and chombo - rest up pal, you worked hard this weekend. sorry to anyone we missed at the start. we didn't manage to wait where i said we would, cos the signup / bib handout process was a complete clusterf()ck. |

Yes it was a great ride, I went home from the Bronx rest stop, but still ended up with 103 miles. Last night I decided I was going to ride the gear bike to work today so I could take it easy, and guess what? IT HAD A FLAT REAR TIRE!!! so I just hung it back in the rack and drove in to work today. Is anyone doing the Escape from New York Century on Sat?
|
Awesome ride-did the 100. Saw a good amount of fixed riders out there-cool. also some cool sights in NYC I've never seen before. I didn't like:
- The registration fiasco-early registered never received bib. - The stop go nature of all the intersections and stoplights-made for a REALLY long day and made my knees a wee bit tender by the end of the day. The rhythm of the ride was: I found myself getting passed on the downhills, only to be passing most on the uphills, so even by the last miles I was hoping for hills or windy flats. In the end I did a total of ~130 miles yesterday! incl my ride to and from Brooklyn. I think I graduated to a slightly higher gear inch after this ride and the training I did. |
i'm late to this conversation, but i was curious what was being said on bike forums about this. i did the full deal. i got started late (out of the park at 8am) though, so maybe i wouldn't have ever caught up with most of you folks. at flushing meadows, i realized that i'd usually probably be rolling out of bed right about then.
i saw maybe 5 fixed bikes, including this one guy with some kind of jury-rigged metal brace holding his seat tube together ("fixed" in more ways than one) who was fully decked out in what i assume is his everyday gutter punk fashion. i loved the contrast with the chamois-crotched spandex consumerist bicyclist aesthetic. not that there's anything wrong with chamois for your crotch. i did it spandex-less, but that's just because i've never done a ride like this, and paragon wasn't open when i rode by at 7:45 in the morning yesterday. so today, my coccyx is as sore as my knees. how do you pronounce "chamois" anyway? friends were guessing "sham-wah". not a word typically heard spoken aloud. |
