if you're still not feeling what this is, look at these:
https://neworleans.craigslist.org/laf/

and if you wanna see what a f*cked up out of touch a$$ our "president" is, check this quote:
We've got a lot of rebuilding to do. First, we're going to save lives and stabilize the situation. And then we're going to help these communities rebuild. The good news is -- and it's hard for some to see it now -- that out of this chaos is going to come a fantastic Gulf Coast, like it was before. Out of the rubbles of Trent Lott's house -- he's lost his entire house -- there's going to be a fantastic house. And I'm looking forward to sitting on the porch. (Laughter.)

That's the one.

It's shocking to me that we can flaunt the Geneva Convention in our treatment of POWs, we can flaunt the US guarantee to due process for detainees in Gitmo, but we're told that the president can't send in federal troops until he gets a request from the governor?

What the F ever, pal. You need to get on the horn to the gov. You need to say, "Do you need federal troops?" If the governor says no, you need to get on the airwaves and say she's rejected federal assistance. You need to make a full court press to get in there and work it out.

Don't BS and tell me that you can't do anything until the governor calls you up and asks.

The job of Homeland Security, and FEMA in particular, is to have plans ready to go. They should have had resources staged so that the minute this thing blew over, they could sweep in with the national guard, buses, helicopters, everything. Why has it taken this long to ramp up? This is ridiculous.
I would expect it takes a few days to arrange busses, drivers, routes, and destinations in a devastated area for 50,000 people! If each bus holds 50...that's 1000 buses and drivers and the security and logistics to go with. Helicopters don't just grow on trees either. Oh but people who aren't lifting a finger themselves expect it all happens overnight, as if conjured from thin air.

bkrownd... youre just plain wrong on this one.. the proverbial ball has been dropped, big time... even Bush admitted it.. and this is a guy who has never admitted anything is wrong... you can argue just to argue if you feel like it.. but read the news.. youre going to have a hard time finding many people who agree that all is up to snuff..

The problem is is that these people would help themselves.. but there's no lines of communication. All cell phones are down. (the 504 area code cannot recieve calls in, but can send out - but of course.. not to 504) No one is walking around the dome with a bullhorn letting people know what is going on. Instead, they make them sit there in 105 degree heat in a crowd with dead bodies laying around and stew. SO what happens? People get frustrated and start to loot, riot and degenerate. It's a poorly handled, grim situation. Most of these are the poorest and most poorly educated people of the city. It's really obvious that there is a class problem here. (Im not saying it's racist.. but that the poor definately got screwed in this)

what really pains me is how this is ripping open seams and showing americans for what they really think and really are... things like:
"why didn't those people just evacuate when they were told to?"
how about, because not everyone can afford a car, and there are *how many* greyhound buses a day, and because we've done such a good job investing in public transportation in this country.
"we need to rebuild"
maybe we should save the people who are about to die first. why is this all about property? why are we talking about insurance company bailouts and rebuild costs when there are still people at risk?
"this sucks. gas prices are so high!"
really? so sorry that their disaster has to affect your perfect life. but, you have a home right? you have a job maybe? and your granmother isn't floating dead in the nasty pool that was once a city? ok, what were you complaining about again?

it makes me really sad. and really angry. really really angry.

Jesus people RELAX. The people here in the Gulf States do not need your hostility. Take all that negativity that you have towards how ****ty this response has been and put it to good use. Donate some money and show your empathy. That's what they need right now.

I am sitting in the Region 8 Command Post working 20 hr days on this relief effort mapping out the hundreds of spills, hospitals under siege, evacuation sites, relief stations, flooded roads where the CG and Navy can rescue people, and they haven't even begun to prioritize the environmental toxic disaster this will evenually become once the citizens have been rescued. Search and rescue is the highest priority above environmental concerns. I flew in from Seattle, but everyone around me is local and has lost their homes, dogs, cats, bikes, cars, boats, workplace, nearly everything, yet they are putting in the long hard days to make things better. Yes, there are some people doing good work here. Yes we know the response has been more than ****ty in more ways than you've ever see on CNN and we can't even get 1/10 of the data we need, but we're doing the best we can with what we have. There actually is a system to respond to emergencies like this and sometimes it works well, like with my Coast Guard units. I cannot give excuses to FEMA or the White House because we're shocked too.

Nolageek, I wish you and every person who's been effected by this the very best. Please know that there are people working to make this a better situation. It will take time. Lots of time, years, but it will rebuild. And for those who insist on typing their hostilities towards the response on this forum, make sure you take the same words and send them to your elected officials so that D.C. knows of your dissatisfaction, not just a bunch of kooks on the internet.

I know everyone in this country is frustrated and annoyed as hell, but this does not get us anywhere. If you're so concerned, then be proactive. Otherwise, yes enjoy the roof over your head, your clean drinking water, and your bike(s).

harlot -- your insight and skills and tireless dedication to help is appreciated. i've already donated but wish there was more i can do. for now, i'm keeping informed. so pls keep us updated on what passes your eyes and ears and hands...

also, everyone should read this story that appeared in National Geographic a year ago.. it's eerie:
https://www3.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0410/feature5/
It was a broiling August afternoon in New Orleans, Louisiana, the Big Easy, the City That Care Forgot. Those who ventured outside moved as if they were swimming in tupelo honey. Those inside paid silent homage to the man who invented air-conditioning as they watched TV "storm teams" warn of a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico. Nothing surprising there: Hurricanes in August are as much a part of life in this town as hangovers on Ash Wednesday.

But the next day the storm gathered steam and drew a bead on the city. As the whirling maelstrom approached the coast, more than a million people evacuated to higher ground. Some 200,000 remained, however—the car-less, the homeless, the aged and infirm, and those die-hard New Orleanians who look for any excuse to throw a party.

The storm hit Breton Sound with the fury of a nuclear warhead, pushing a deadly storm surge into Lake Pontchartrain. The water crept to the top of the massive berm that holds back the lake and then spilled over. Nearly 80 percent of New Orleans lies below sea level—more than eight feet below in places—so the water poured in. A liquid brown wall washed over the brick ranch homes of Gentilly, over the clapboard houses of the Ninth Ward, over the white-columned porches of the Garden District, until it raced through the bars and strip joints on Bourbon Street like the pale rider of the Apocalypse. As it reached 25 feet (eight meters) over parts of the city, people climbed onto roofs to escape it.

Thousands drowned in the murky brew that was soon contaminated by sewage and industrial waste. Thousands more who survived the flood later perished from dehydration and disease as they waited to be rescued. It took two months to pump the city dry, and by then the Big Easy was buried under a blanket of putrid sediment, a million people were homeless, and 50,000 were dead. It was the worst natural disaster in the history of the United States.

When did this calamity happen? It hasn't—yet. But the doomsday scenario is not far-fetched.

Sage advice.

In addition to sending money, if you can offer housing, especially in the Southeast, hit up www.hurricanehousing.org. You'll find my couch up there for anyone who wants to spend some time in Boston this coming fall.

your self rightousness is frustrating.. i see discussion and information being passed here.. with two of you telling us we suck for doing it. Do what you have to do, and let us do what we want to do.Just because we are posting on a bike forum doesnt mean we dont do anything else.. i dont know where youre getting that idea from.

I didn't say you guys sucked, SL, you're reading between lines that aren't there. I'm just saying that anyone who is so frustrated should put their energy towards something positive. Donate money, put together a little fundraiser, make sure your town has a good emergency mngt system, whatever. It's that energy you have that could be used towards good use.

Out.

Yessir, lotsa negativity bout the response at teh federal level. That's good for the future but does nothing on the ground as has been pointed out.

One good thing, absolutely positive thing about this entire disaster, a beautiful thing with thorns like many a purty flower.

Gas prices are soaring all over the continent. There's no ryhme or reason to it, the only shortages are in areas where the infrastructure is directly affected by the storm but up go those prices anyway! It's a beautiful thing.

Whoa. Spent a few days offline immediately after I posted on Friday. There are some bullsh*t posts I'd like to respond to, but I agree with Harlot - let's try to help now. We can worry more about blame later.
Last Tuesday, I gave as much as I possibly could to the Red Cross, made sure all the friends and fam with any money gave as much as they could. Myself and some coworkers talked enough sh*t to HR - they agreed to match $ for $ any contribution we make to any charity involved in the relief effort! I also volunteered to go down to either Mississippi or New Orleans with an Illinois contingent of firemen (my roomie's a fireman). Waiting to hear back. So honestly I feel like I've done all I could - and I implore everyone to do the same. And thanks to those who stuck up for me in my absence.
