Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I was on the Metra train this afternoon on my way home from school and thought of this story.

Fingering that U-Lock must have been electric. There are lots of ******bags riding the Metra. For some reason people feel a sense of entitlement on the Metra trains that doesn't exist on the L. I was involved in an almost-fisticuffs-incident last week whereby an older man was talking louder than normal on his cellphone. Three or four gruff guys decided to let it be known that Grandpa was twisting their tit. Disaster averted by cooler heads.

Humility is lost on the suburbs I guess.

I am kind of disappointed. Thirty replys and not one controversial.

We all know you can write and I guess that is entertainment enough!

Better get out my Christopher Cross album out because I think I’m getting soft. I come here and find nothing but kind words. I’m at a loss. Don’t have to defend myself.

Maybe I could go back and rewrite the bit so the guy’s in a wheelchair and I’m taking his usual spot. Wheelchair gets a flat and I refuse to help...something/anything.

Na, we’ll leave it as it is and just say thanks.

(I really do have a Christopher Cross album)

I was waiting for the line:

So I looked him in the eye. "Pop!" I said, "You're donuts."

Other than that, I enjoyed this Kerouackian adventure. It was nicely told. Are you sure you were THAT cool, though? I mean, you're claiming a lot of cool for someone who never even told the guy he was donuts.

"Some punk on the Metra failed in getting me to make room for him by moving my bike."

You sir, write/read like like an acid jazz riff chased with a rye ginger in a smoky beatnik lounge. Bravo!

He was so upset that he threw himself on the tracks in front of the train, derailing it with his thick skull.
