Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

So a couple weeks ago I almost got in a wreck and I did a quick skip stop/powerslide thing, afterwards I hear a ping. By the time I get home I have a couple broken spokes on my hands, no biggie. I go to the bike shop around here that I actually like and get some extra spokes. The mechanic working at the time has a bit of trouble getting my lockring and cog off, they were on good. Fast forward to now I fix the spokes and go to put the cog on, it threads on fine. Next I put the lockring on, not so good. I can only tighten it a few turns before it completley stops. I take it off and notice it looks like the cog had something stuck to it. I wind the cog off and it looks to be maybe a little strip of threading. I get the cog back on and try the lockring again, no dice. The threading looks like it's fine, I might have to examine it later but does it sound like my hub is pretty much screwed? If so do you think maybe the mechanic at the shop could of messed something up when trying to get the cog off?

I hope not, it's a surly fixed/free(unfortunatly) hub and I've always used a good amount of grease when putting the cog/lockring on.

EDIT: Obviously the title is threading for all you smartassi....

From: south side, you got a problem with that?
loctite time!

once threaing starts to go, it goes. sounds like you crossed threas or didn't have stuff tight to begin with. you are screwe.

(lack of some d's just to piss you off).

always get fixed/fixed, just for this scenario.

but. . . red loctite WILL work, despite what others will say. i messenger in NYC on a loctite'd wheel (well, i will as soon as i get my fixie back from japan!), and never a problem.

Bikes: Converted 1997 Trek Singletrack 930 singlespeed and a Kona Lavadome singlespeed, fixed Dahon folding bike, fixed 27" Miyata road bike, early 70's Raleigh Chopper

I've got JB weld holding my BB's fixed cup as I stripped the threads installing it. I've also got loctite on my cog and BB lockring combo. Suicide? Maybe. But until I build up a fixed specific rear 700c wheel to replace my 27 incher, it'll have to do.

yeah the thing about this is the mechanic did it but it wasn't really recorded in the paperwork or anything as he did it real quick for free. So I took it to the shop today and they said they're either:

a. going to re-thread if they can do it and have it reliable
b. give me a new one
c. if it goes against some bs liability policy they'll try to sell me a new one at cost with maybe more taken off
