Who carries cheap cogs?
I just scoped Harris Cyclery for a new rear cog - THEY WANT OVER $25 FOR A SINGLE COG!!! I paid only twice that for my entire rear wheel! Who has a good selection of (new OR used) cogs for reasonable prices? I want a 1/8" 18-tooth to start with.

Why on earth anyone would want to skimp out on a cog is beyond me. Spend the money, get an EAI, Suntour or Dura-Ace. Search this forum and see the problems that people have had with cheaper cogs (Surlys, Somas, etc) and then decide if spending an extra $10-15 on something that is going to last seems unreasonable. Don't nickle and dime yourself into a whole new set of problems.

i concur...a cog is a precision part of you bike...and one under a lot of stress...a crappy rim or spokes barely makes a difference...

And I would know that the cog I pay Harris $25+ is a better brand than I get on e-Bay for $15 because??

Phil, DA, Suntour, and EAI are the best brands out there. I've heard of a few people stripping EAI cogs though. My next cog will be a Phil and I will pay $40 for it. My life is worth it.

Ben's Bike is selling D-A cogs for $18, that's not a bad price. I wouldn't buy any of the cheaper ones.
There is a relatively small number of quality track cogs: Dura-Ace, SOMA, EAI, the new Surly, Campagnolo, Sun Tour, Miche (maybe), Phil Wood... did I leave any off?
Anything else is liable to be a cheap stamped cog with poor materials and sloppy tolerances. There are too many people on this forum who can attest to how a bad cog stripped their hub. A decent cog lasts a really long time. Skip a beer here or there over the next year and you'll have it paid off and have many more years of reliable service ahead of you.
Or maybe you'd rather buy a new hub...

Hehe, my cog cost all of $3. Mind you, it's an absolute POS that I only bought because the local shops have nothing better to offer. Anyway, it's going strong at 1000 miles. Fingers crossed.

OK - Harris has D.A., Soma, or E.A.I. for between $26 and $30. BensBikes has D.A. for $16. Still a 38% difference in price!
I don't mind paying for quality, but SHEEESH - I don't like being gouged! Especially when you consider that manufacturing costs on a threaded cog are probably less than a dollar per cog! SOMEBODY's making a heck of a lot on cogs - and it probably isn't Bens Bikes!

Actually the costs are higher than you might expect. The cog is cast, forged, and then machined. Some heat treating occurs in there somewhere. There's a lot of work that goes into a quality cog versus a stamped cheapo.
If it were otherwise, someone would come out with the high quality $5 cog and sweep the competition.

Dura Ace is Dura Ace. The only diff is Harris wants $10 more for the same cog than Bens Bikes! I'm willing to pay my LBS a premium (if they stocked SS cogs, which they don't), but an internet purchase is something else.

I thought Soma were good quality cogs as well. People have had problems with them? they look like a high quality machined cog to me...
