Evan nailed it. Here's what you do: move to Brooklyn, Queens or the Bronx. I say Brooklyn, but I'm from there. Don't move to a fashionable area like Williamsburg or Park Slope, move to like Sheepshead Bay or Benshonhurst. Maybe even Bay Ridge, Gravesend or along Ocean Ave or Coney Island Ave. Establish residency in NYC long enough so that you qualify for NYC resident tuition at any City University of New York (CUNY) school. There's about a million of them scattered throughout the 5 boros. Then apply to Brooklyn College cuz they're f*ckin' awesome when it comes to liberal arts. Itzhak Perlman and F. Murray Abraham used to teach there. Also, it's a nice campus in a nice neighborhood. Don't expect dorms cuz no CUNY school has 'em. You'll get a nice commute and if you need more miles, there's tons of places to ride. Also, Brooklyn's no slouch when compared to Manhattan. Easily has some of the best restaurants, culture, neighborhoods and people. And of course, we got da troo Noo Yawk axent.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention there's some people on fixies that race at Prospect Park in Bklyn. Don't forget to go down, say hi and beg them to let you race.

Ah man, I have plenty of space. You're welcome to crash here for a weekend.

evanyc 11-17-05 02:17 PM

i recently moved to brooklyn and i try to go into manhattan as little as possible. brooklyn is awesome.

if you end up going to brooklyn college (a CUNY school, which means City University of New York) there are some really chill neighborhoods in the area. you could do Midwood, Windsor Heights, Brooklyn Heights. it's all great riding. seriously, brooklyn is where it's at, just not the parts of brooklyn that people would have you believe.

habitus 11-17-05 02:22 PM

i'd tell you to move to seattle but...

it ****ing rains all the time! all the time! please don't come to seattle. it rains all the time! all the time. all the time. ad infinitum.

is it raining now? hah!

LoveParkRIP 11-17-05 02:23 PM

I had a blast in Brooklyn. There seems to be a lot going on there, and there's plenty of young people. I know nothing about riding bikes around there, but it seemed inviting.

evanyc 11-17-05 02:29 PM

if you stay off of streets like atlantic and flatbush it's super chill and inviting. atlantic and flatbush are fun to ride too, if you're lookin for that sorta thing. its super easy to get around brooklyn on bikes.

timmhaan 11-17-05 02:33 PM

yeah, brooklyn is great. although, i fear what's going to happen within the next 5-10 years. there seems to be an awful lot of attention focused here lately. high dollar developments, mega commerical investments, etc. prices are heading upwards everyday, and neighborhoods are changing monthly it seems.

That's downtown Tim. People been saying the same thing about Coney for years and it ain't happened yet. Besides, Brooklyn's huge and like Thomas Payne says, only the dead know Brooklyn, cuz it would take more than a lifetime to know it troo and troo.

8oh4 11-17-05 05:48 PM

Atlanta,

Big dumb city thats hard to get around, with or without a car
Philly would be a better place, probably cheaper
and an infinitly better environment/proximity to all things northeast and worthwhile

If you have any specific Atlanta ?'s feel free to pm me..
Best of luck, I just moved a few months ago and its crazy expensive

i actually have a similar dillema myself, well not similar at all actually. Im a film student at The university of oklahoma and recently applied to transfer to NYU on a whim. I actually get paid to attend Ou because im a national merit finalist. I get about 4,000 a year in surplus scholarships, not much but hey.

NYU offered free tuition based on financial need. I dont understand that by the way, sure my income is low but my dad makes 250,000 a year. NYU has a strange idea of financial need. hmmm.

But then i got offered a study abroad scholarship to The university of london. My sister livves in london so rent would be non-existant but their film school isnt as well known as NYU.

I am torn. I have 6 months to decide though. The reason i came to OU was following a girl, but with only a few semesters left of college we agreed studying somewhere else could be beneficial. We will of course stay together.

xunwedsailorx 11-17-05 06:23 PM

Jam. I need to know what you did to con NYU. NOW.

I'm in the middle of applying just for *****s and giggles to see what they say and what they offer.

gregtheripper 11-17-05 07:02 PM

if you apply to the more expensive schools you might get lucky with a scholorship. i get 7,500 a year from northeastern (boston), so that's why i'm here now. it's still very expensive, but i manage to swing it with a perkins grant, fed stafford and private loans. i thought about going to school in NYC, but it was too close to home at the time (new jersey). as boston goes, it's pretty much the same cost of living in new york, maybe higher. apartments in the nu area are pretty expensive, unless you go out to mission hill, brighton, allston, jp, somerville, ect. in fenway, kenmore, back bay think 1300+ for a 2br, and not even a nice one. the city is cool though, but its small compared to nyc. everything closes early (2am), which is ******* lame. overall i like it though. you really need to explore the area to fully appreciate it. and there are a ton of schools here.

sometimes its worth it to live in the slightly more expensive city just for the experience of living there. just figure out how to save hardcore and do as much on the cheap as possible. but it really depends on your situation.

Super Rookie 11-17-05 07:04 PM

dude. you want to go to canada. go while you still can.

run run run!!!!

powerjb 11-17-05 07:10 PM

Somebody mentioned boulder, but if you're looking for a city, than I'd avoid it, Boulder is pretty small, and denver is just eh. I"m in a similar boat though. I'm done in may, and have to choose a grad school to do my Phd at. It looks like Villanova is going to be my first choice. Any of you philly kids go there? How long would the commute by bike be from somewhere more downtown. From what I understand, it's not exactly in the city, but i don't want to live in suburbs.

If you do decide to check out Boulder, there's always a couch here... especially for an unwed sailor fan.

xunwedsailorx 11-17-05 07:15 PM

Ha, I don't know about Colorado, but thanks for the couch invite. I'll keep that in mind.

I'm going to follow through on the NYU app and see how that goes. Hopefully I can pull a miracle like Jam and score free tuition.

Jamtastic 11-17-05 07:38 PM

i contacted their financial aide department about scholarship deadlines and takled to a nice lady on the phone. She told me scholarships are more difficult for out of staters but that the school is very...very generous with financial aide. Im not sure how much different it will be for you though

I am a transfer student with a 4.0 at a University and a pretty good film portfolio. I think that may have had something to do with my financial help. Also they know i am a national merit finalist, which means they know i dont really have scholarship problems.
Just ace your ACT or SAT. Thats the trick. haha

Damn, Jam.

Well, I'm a bum, I only have like a 3.1 at SCAD and my classes now are pathetic because I'm too unhappy to go to class. (This will be a second transfer.) My ACT is decent though at a 30. I mean, if I could get a decent amount of money it would help and justify it a bit more.

*sigh*

i'm beginning to stress out.

ImOnCrank 11-17-05 08:06 PM

Threadjack sorry: Jam which U-london school are you looking at? I think there's more than 20 schools that fall under the UL umbrella.
