Ok. I decided not to threadjack and started this monster.

I'm thinking of moving, going to school somewhere that doesn't suck, and seeing what the possibilities are.

Any suggestions? I know Chicago, Atl, NYC, and Philly are big cities with options and people, but I'm just seeing what's out there and if anyone has experiences or anything.

Thanks a lot.

Don't worry, I have no delusions of being a messenger. I just enjoy riding, and commuting would be a big plus. I would like to not have a car to cut down on expenses.

I think it also depends what your major is, unless youre there just to get a piece o paper and dont care what it actually says, thats your choice.

Well, I'm liberal arts, English. Writing, teaching, whatever. So, a lot of schools are going to have that.

spud 11-17-05 12:30 PM

ok, then uh get the **** outta kentucky

ImOnCrank 11-17-05 12:31 PM

It's all about Father Uligan's College of Knowledge. Or NYC either's fine

I need a place to go! I'm trying. I want to. Saving money and everything now. Just need a school/city to go to.

Devolution 11-17-05 12:31 PM

Pittsburgh! Cheap, good schools, great city.

Cheap.

Did I say cheap?

Yeah, cheap. Rent is cheap, groceries are cheap, entertainment is cheap. Taxes are high.

I mean, i thought about NYU, but that's too damn expensive. I mean, I should still be in art school for that kind of money.

timmhaan 11-17-05 12:33 PM

wherever you move just make sure you have a bit of savings to fall back on. sometimes it's a bit rough to get set up someplace. i've moved 5 times in the last 6 years - 2 times to different cities\states. you'll burn through money quickly, trust me.

xunwedsailorx 11-17-05 12:34 PM

right. i won't move until this school year is up i think. but i'd like to know where to start looking and getting opinions so i can see about getting the transfer stuff from school all set before it drives me insane during the summer.

hyperRevue 11-17-05 12:37 PM

I loved going to college in Boston.
But definitely not cheap.

spud 11-17-05 12:37 PM

yeah unless you have a specific need to be in NYC youd be better off somewhere else.

fruit 11-17-05 12:40 PM

philly. cheap, cheap, and cheaper. lotsa stuff going on.

did i mention my rent is $50 a month?

cheaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap.

timmhaan 11-17-05 12:41 PM

i wouldn't go to NYC for school. it's waaaaaaaaaaay too expensive, unless you have a good grant\scholarship or already lived here and couldn't leave for some reason.

xunwedsailorx 11-17-05 12:41 PM

Yes. I forgot about boston. I know schools there won't be cheap. It's unfortunate. It's like paying to smell Ivy League or something.

By no means am I stupid, so I should get some money from schools. But, if tuition is like 20K, that really doesn't matter a whole helluva lot.

1fluffhead 11-17-05 12:45 PM

Baltimore is not too expensive and tons of colleges in the city. Pretty easy to commute by bike as well.

spud 11-17-05 12:46 PM

yep, baltimore is rather convenient in the megalopolis as well.

xunwedsailorx 11-17-05 12:46 PM

hmmmm. Didn't think about Baltimore... thanks.

baltimore is convenient because there are a lot of places nearby to escape to, but who really wants to live in baltimore? i dig it for a visit, but yeah.

i'd say philly for a pretty good cool/cheap ratio.

i'd also recommend NYC if you can afford it, but i need to know what talents/skills/etc. you would contribute to our fine city. also, look into CUNY schools. i got to brooklyn college and it's pretty solid.

delay 11-17-05 01:17 PM

Some of the smaller college(type) towns are cheaper, have good schools and decent scenes.

I certainly won't reccomend Champaign to anyone, but how about Madison WI, Columbia, MO or Boulder maybe?

xunwedsailorx 11-17-05 01:22 PM

CUNY?

hmmm... I've heard bad things about baltimore from friends. I'll think about it though.

Any atlanta people here?

LoveParkRIP 11-17-05 01:24 PM

You should visit all these cities if you haven't already. This seems like an important move. The last thing you want to do is enroll and end up hating the environment. If you have contacts in any of the cities you mentioned, call them up and spend a weekend w/ them.

Some good things about Philly

-Cheap
-Great Schools
-Bike friendly
-Just a short train or bus ride from DC, NYC, Boston

I'll recommend Madison. I was an English major there and had a great time...very good literature department. It's not all that hard to establish residency and get the in-state rate.

Yes, Philly is sounding better and better every time. I don't have any friend there though. So, visiting cheaply would be difficult.

Evan nailed it. Here's what you do: move to Brooklyn, Queens or the Bronx. I say Brooklyn, but I'm from there. Don't move to a fashionable area like Williamsburg or Park Slope, move to like Sheepshead Bay or Benshonhurst. Maybe even Bay Ridge, Gravesend or along Ocean Ave or Coney Island Ave. Establish residency in NYC long enough so that you qualify for NYC resident tuition at any City University of New York (CUNY) school. There's about a million of them scattered throughout the 5 boros. Then apply to Brooklyn College cuz they're f*ckin' awesome when it comes to liberal arts. Itzhak Perlman and F. Murray Abraham used to teach there. Also, it's a nice campus in a nice neighborhood. Don't expect dorms cuz no CUNY school has 'em. You'll get a nice commute and if you need more miles, there's tons of places to ride. Also, Brooklyn's no slouch when compared to Manhattan. Easily has some of the best restaurants, culture, neighborhoods and people. And of course, we got da troo Noo Yawk axent.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention there's some people on fixies that race at Prospect Park in Bklyn. Don't forget to go down, say hi and beg them to let you race.

LoveParkRIP 11-17-05 01:55 PM

Ah man, I have plenty of space. You're welcome to crash here for a weekend.

evanyc 11-17-05 02:17 PM

i recently moved to brooklyn and i try to go into manhattan as little as possible. brooklyn is awesome.

if you end up going to brooklyn college (a CUNY school, which means City University of New York) there are some really chill neighborhoods in the area. you could do Midwood, Windsor Heights, Brooklyn Heights. it's all great riding. seriously, brooklyn is where it's at, just not the parts of brooklyn that people would have you believe.

habitus 11-17-05 02:22 PM

i'd tell you to move to seattle but...

it ****ing rains all the time! all the time! please don't come to seattle. it rains all the time! all the time. all the time. ad infinitum.

is it raining now? hah!

LoveParkRIP 11-17-05 02:23 PM

I had a blast in Brooklyn. There seems to be a lot going on there, and there's plenty of young people. I know nothing about riding bikes around there, but it seemed inviting.
