Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

SF has thousands of fixed wheel cyclists I don't know, about a 100 I see on a regular basis, probably about 40 that I know by name, and around 10 ride regularly with!

SF has been very good to me in so many ways. I am having the time of my life!

Bikes: 80's Hoffy track frame 49x15, 80's guerciotti track 47x15(destroyd by a car), '78 ross conversion(RIP, died of old age), '06 fuji track(RIP, hit by a trolley), '75 Alan Aluminum(in the works)

in my hometown of columbia, sc...1 that i know of, i saw a fixie downtown last weekend. In savannah, there are about 15 or 20 kids that i know of that ride fixed, and i've seen a lot more people around town doing so, mainly the kids that go to college there or people that have graduated.

I believe that the NB scene was biggest at the end of the past Spring semester. The last alleycat that semester had 5 fixed racers, 2 SS racers, 2 fixed spectators, and 1 fixed organizer. All but one were NB/RU affiliated.
But I do hope that it will grow. I'd love to come back for a large alleycat.

habitus.. is your avatar you? for some reason i always picture you telepatically sending your messages to me instead of me reading them.

bloomington used to have some good rides, but kids have moved and people hang out with totally different crowds, bang their girlfriends and stop riding, etc.

I concur. I didn't learn about 'the scene' until I started reading bikeforums! Ha!

ha! that's great. no, it's not me, although i'll never post a picture of myself so you can continue to think it is. pictured is michel foucault, french philosopher, historian, critical theorist.

his expression seems one of exasperation to me. i imagine sometimes just pointing to the avatar and saying, "see, look what you've done to foucault!"

If you're talking about the Altadena, La Canada, North Pasadena Scene, theres like, just me.

If you're talking Los Angeles Area, whoooo doggie, there would have to be almost a hundred fixie riders, though the overall underground bike culture thing is much larger.

I have no idea the amount of fixed riders in The OC, as there isn't really a "scene" down here, except for the roadies and their weekend rides. I did see a dude on an IRO while in Lake Forest the other day.

The "scene" in Fayetteville is myself and two other guys that dont even live here most of the time. But there are some monster hills here so most people that I ride with think im insane. We do have a bike gang that rides every friday and some of the guys that I ride with are thinking about getting bikes to convert so maybe in time we will be out in numbers. Villebilly stink patrol rides deep and stupid!!

I never seen any of these people on the west side... do they avoid SM and Venice?

Brooklyn has a 'few' but you'd have to specify 'scene' Are you looking for people that actually ride or people that own one?

The west side has a huge bike crew, not many fixies though, but hipsters just the same.

In Plano, TX Im the only one I know of. Not a big bike town. On the rec trails when you say "on your left", pedestrians move left!

i feel like i used to see them like crazy about 4 years ago, but most of those people ride geared bikes now. i see a few kids (saw a fuqing suh-weeet 3rensho the other day!), but more that look like they are fixed until they start coasting. we have way more single-speeders now than any other period in recent memory.
i have two friends who ride fixed, and we pretty much ride only for transport, if there is somewhere to go, bikes are always the choice.
even with only three of us, it is mad fun to do the one beer per bar thing for the evening. it's better than sitting on your ass all night!
