MKS pedal comparison

i tried searching but couldnt find the info i was looking for.

Ill be placing an order with business cycles tomorrow and pedals are on my list. My question is, are the RX-1, Custom Nuevo, and/or the Royal Nuevo pedals really 70+ $ better than the sylvan pedals?

If so, what are the major differences other than the bearings?

Also, anyone know anything about the MKS Unique Custom pedals? i cant find any pictures and google search doesnt yield much.

eyefloater 12-12-05 12:34 AM

check on ebay - ben's bikes maybe. i think they include an image w/ their mks pedal auctions that shows all the models side by side.

Well i used to ride sylvans and now they are on the girlfriends bike... now i have royal nuevos that i got for my birthday. The difference is noticable, both bearings and craftmanship, but for $70.00 more i would never have bought them for myself. I dont race enough to justify it. But they are the ****. And the smoothest pedal i have ever held in my hand.

MLPROJECT 12-12-05 01:24 AM

juvikyle was talking about a new mid-range MKS pedal thats around $50? he wasn't sure about it, but thought it was a better sylvan with sealed bearings... anyone have any info?

Unique Custom

This is the pedal, but I know nothing about it and have never seen it. But I would love to do both, so fill me in. All I know is that it is around 50 and NJS certified.

If you decide to go with the Sylvans I have a pair with clips and straps that I only used once. I'll sell them to you for $25+ shipping.

do while x 12-12-05 02:03 AM

i already own the sylvans, but i wanted to make sure i wasnt missing out on too much...the unique customs sound pretty sweet, if they are in fact similar to the sylvans but njs certified. does anyone know if MKS has a website?

MLPROJECT 12-12-05 02:18 AM

john has them listed at $47.50, but no flick

eyefloater 12-12-05 02:27 AM

mkspedals.com ... but not shots of the unique customs (I already checked).

the IRO pack is the cheapest i've seen (with cheap straps)... bens cycle comes in second w/ MKS straps (they're good until they get wet) for $45

Matthew A Brown 12-12-05 07:26 PM

Dude, first ever Oval handle. At least that I'm aware of.

Nice.

Nothing else to add, sorry.

here you go with all up to date pedals from MKS.

Ok the RX1 are the top dog of the line , They don't have anything (Hole) for double toe straps

The Custom Nuevos are on my bike in Japan and SMOOTH like the RX1 but can use double straps.

Plus another old model not listed , I will do that later If they didn't lock or ban me as requested.

Photos are from Business Cycles!

talked to business cycles today, and it turns out that the custom unique pedals are basically the sylvans w/ an NJS stamp, except they dont come in black. I kept my sylvans. May upgrade later. Thanks guys.

Ceya 12-12-05 08:38 PM

Really, I would look at the pics again. I have 3 of the models show and the body is different, they are lighter and removable plates. Alot more than just a stamp.

Don't take my word on it, go find a shop that have them. If I had all three here I would send it to you for a test run.

Maybe when I return, send me email and If you haven't got any by Feb 06 , I will send you mine to test out. Just return them.

Yes I am kool like that!

I'm not gunna be track racing or anything is it worth getting the cages with the sylvans that are aluminum an njs stamped or just the plain steel ones?

I appreciate the offer, but its not that big of a deal. Im aware that the RX-1, Custom Nuevo, and Royal Nuevo have different cages and are lighter, but according to john "you pay the extra $20 for the stamp" for the custom unique pedals.

I will try to find an lbs that carries them to check them out in person, but there arent too many around my hood.

I have a pair of MKS GR-9's. They feel really small with my size 12 shoes. Does anyone with a bigger foot use 'em? What about the MKS Custom Nuevos? Are they wider?
Thanks

hyperRevue 02-13-06 03:15 PM

If anyone has a set of Black Sylvans they wanna trade for Silver ones.
PM ME.

na975 02-13-06 03:30 PM

i have the rx-1 too! there great, but small & narrow.

ronin2046 12-31-06 01:04 PM

Are the Royal Nuevos sealed loose ball bearings and the Custom Nuevos sealed sealed cartridge bearings?

na975 12-31-06 09:50 PM

would it matter?

I'd prefer sealed cartridge for the low-maintenance factor. Unless the Royals are sealed pretty damn good.

:o

I got the GR-9s and they feel small with my size 9 1/2 shoe!

The RX-1's are definitely narrower than the Nuevos and made with weight savings in mind. that means in part that the rear plate is held by 3 screws instead of four, and the front by only two. If you hit a pedal, you are more likely going to have to replace the pedal because only one bolt needs to get bunged up. You can get RX-1's in gold as well, if it matters.

The Nuevos are equivalent except for bearings and the color of the plates. They are wider than RX-1's and a bit beefier. For some reason the dust caps tend to come off a little more readily than on the RX-1s, but they are easily and inexpensively replaced if that happens.

Are you planning to use cleats? MKS is converting their pedals to work with a relatively new slotted cleat that's really great. It has a deep slot and fits 3-hole Look-pattern drilling on cycling shoes. It already fit the RX-1 (which didn't have to be changed). If you're buying pedals right now, the Nuevos are in production but still getting NJS certification (the distance between the plates had to be changed slightly) so you can't get the compatible pedals (I've also heard that MKS just wants to sell their existing stock before making the new pedals available). The new ones will replace the current versions once they are available.

As for the Sylvans, you get what you pay for, but they definitely aren't RX-1's or Nuevos. Poorer metal, poorer finish, bearing seats aren't machined as well so the bearings (which may be the same as in the other pedals) don't seat as accurately and feel like they're binding or clicking a bit. (The cost of sealed bearings is in the bearing seats, not in the bearings -- it costs money to machine the aluminum to high tolerances and to do the same to the steel axles where they fit against the bearings). Personally I'd go for RX-1's right now if I had to buy immediately. If I could wait three months, I'd have more choices available.

Edit: As for fitting double toe straps, you can do it with RX-1's. This is an issue many pedals have, including C-Record, Dura Ace PD-7400, and the like. You don't really want to put a strap in the front pair of holes in a Nuevo anyway, because it's too far forward to do much good for most people. Instead, most trackies run one strap in through the slot on the back of the pedal, around the center vertical strut on the back plate, and then back out the other slot on the other side of the strut. Then run the other strap straight through. You can also do it a bit more elegantly by running one strap in through the outside slot and the other strap through the outside hole in the frame, then cross them under the pedal so that the front strap is now in back, and vice versa. What started as the front strap then comes out the inside slot on the rear plate of the pedal, the erstwhile rear strap now comes out the strap hole on the inside of the frame, and then both go up and over and into the buckles. The original rear strap tip goes into the front buckle, the original front strap tip goes into the rear buckle. Looks nice, works well.

11.4: would like to see a pic of your double strap suggestion!!!
