"Cycling Plus" tried your technique with a 2005 Kryptonite chain. While trying to cut the links, they wore out some disks. Did not make any progress on the chain links...gave up after ten minutes. Kryptonite uses about three different padlocks with its chains. Depending on which Kryptonite padlock is used, an angle grinder with brand new disks will take six to ten minutes to open the padlock. You might have to replace a disk or two. I'm hoping that Kryptonite will soon upgrade their padlocks to Abus quality. According to "Cycling Plus", their cutting disks just wore out trying to cut the best Abus padlock.

This thread may be helpful to a literate, thoughtful, computer-using crook...if such an thing exists.

alanbike, I just went to the abus website, and their chain/padlock combos sell for over twice what a NYC lock sells for.

I mean damn.

alanbikehouston, i can say, for sure, that an angle grinder will cut right through the links. i got my chain in 2005 and cut the **** out of the link with the aforementioned drill-based cutting wheel in under 10 minutes. with a proper angle grinder that would allow for more pressure to be allied, i am confident that i could do it in under 5.

Use a cutting disc not a grinding disc. Cost for a decent one is about $5 It will go right through. I use one, on a Dewalt angle grinder, to cut locks off bikes. I timed the last one, cheap cyclepro U lock 12mm shackle, 33 seconds.

Bikes: Fbm Night Train, Fixed Club Fuji(so sexy).

Would it be possible to try and get kryptonite to send you replcement keys for it. It says on their web-site they have replacements for every lock. If it is registered they will send them right out.. If it isn't you can send them a picture showing it isn't on a bike and the serial number and explain the deal to them. I think it's worth giving them a call and asking.

you can usually rent an angle grinder from any tool rental place. you might even be able to bring the lock into the place and have them do it for you for like $5 or less
