I just had the oddest collision
Riding down brooklyn's 3rd ave at about 3am, not a car in sight, 'cept a waste management truck pulling into the arabic parochial school parking lot. I'm not dressed right, bad gloves, bad hat, exposed ankles, very cold. I put my head down for a minute to gaze lovingly at my front wheel. I look up and I'm about 2 feet from a HUGE stack of cardboard boxes. It's one humongous cardboard box, with a smaller, but taller, cardboard box inside of that one, and a smaller, but taller, cardboard box inside of that one. Whole thing is about 4 feet tall. And it's right in the middle of the bike lane.
Oh crap! I think. But of course it's too late to do anything about it, even steer to avoid it. I really don't know how it snuck up on me like that. I hadn't had that much to drink. I ran headlong into the pile. After that... I'm not sure. I went into a slow, sort of wacky feeling skid, but I didn't fall over. I came almost to a complete stop, and then I felt the rear wheel loosen, and I was free. I rolled away. I think I completely steamrollered the boxes. I didn't stop to check.
Anyway, just thought I'd chime in to add the story of a pulse-pounding but ultimately crash. Woo hoo! I'm warm now.

Why did your front wheel deserve such attention?

that reminds me of once when we were out on our freeride bikes terrorizing the neighbourhood, I went to nose manual and knock over a garbage can with my rear wheel but somehow it got stuck under my wheel and caused a sweet slide untill I hit the curb and fell over.... or running a four way stop and having pants catch in the chainring and skidding through the intersection at like 35km/h..
