Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Bikes: 'Cha-ruzu Fosuta Orusan Kein' Fuji Track (2005), Schwinn Tank MTB (?), Fuji Royale (1979)

you can use your legs to steer, either the handlebars or skid side to side; fishtailing in a straightline. ive done the first, its not that great or very fun, or very useful.

that's what I ride, and I can skid okay on that and all I weigh is like 125. just kinda jump the back half of your bike while being clipped in, and you'll get skips.

once you get skips, you'll get skids.

Okay, so now what?

Seems like the red ones really help you stop, while the blue ones you should only use in an emergency. All that aside, I had my buddy riding his fix for the first time and showed him how to skid on the gravel trails in the park (Hermann, for you Htowners). He then proceeded to skid on command after that. Typical, I go fixed all on my own and it takes me a two weeks and a rainy day to learn how to skid. Keep it up, it's like getting to third base when you get it down.

Once you get skipping down, you'll rarely ever skid unless you're showing off. It took me two tires to get skidding out of my system, now I just skip

Adidas Sambas to rule them all...I rode a brakeless 20" wheel bike before all this fixie madness, and my green suede World Cup Sambas my sister bought me in '96 still rock, even after skidding the hell out of the sole trying to slow down my old 20". They are both incredibly stiff, and incredibly comfortable once broken in. They also have a mean instep for shooting longbows on the soccer field.

I believe Kennethalan knows what I'm going on about. Just ask him.

Hello, first time posting on here. I am also running similar (42-16) and i'm learning to skid. I think higher gearing would make it a bit easier because you need some speed to skid and to get a little speed going on a 42-16 you need to peddle kinda fast, therefore making it harder to stop peddling. if your running 49-16 your going at a good pace but peddling slower so to stop your peddling should be easier, i think. correct me if i'm wrong. Also when i try locking my wheel the cog rotates about an eighth of a turn, how do i lock that cog in there so it won't budge?
Thanks

umm, ease in stopping has nothing to do with cadence and everything to do with how much force you have to apply to stop the wheel from moving. lower ratios will make it so less force is required. seriously, dude.

ps: "peddle".... i'm not buying.

O.k. You're wrong. There are alot of factors at play. Number 1 being the rider.

good job...now try some super power stop skids with your weight all on the rear wheel...then your legs'll really be sore afterwards

I saw a vid yesterday of a good no hands skid, guy does it seamlessly. I posted it up with another video. But the first video of the 2 was 12 minutes long and had not much riding, I think it broke the attention span / patience of download for many.

This is the second one, only a few minutes long and almost all riding https://www.youtube.com/watch.php?v=SCeTloFBNMY

WOW!!! I learned to skid just a month ago and I"m only 120# I don't think it has anything to do with weight...
