I gotta say, having lived 3 years in North Philly and 1 year in West Philly, that West Philly seemed to have a lot more going on. I was always depressed and slightly fearful in North Philly. I did enjoy the area surrounding my place on Race St. near 34th St. I may actually be moving back to West Philly for some additional schooling, and look forward to it.

Just an FYI.....REI in Conshohocken (1 mile northwest of philadelphia city limit) is holding a "Cold Weather Cycling" clinic tonight at 7:00.. I'm thinking of stopping by just to see what it's all about...(plus it's free)

Genericbikedude:Frankenstein bikes: final word. I kind of had a feeling that a $300 bike would be a POS, and yet, I've seen a bunch of them all over CC. Strangely never ridden by couriers.

I've had good experiences with Bikeline on Arch and the one way out near Newtown Square.
Re: Living in philly, which should maybe be a topic onto itself:
I grew up here, and moved up to NYC for a number of years. Its an incredibly bike friendly town, traffic is quite managable (compared to NYC anyway), and there are tons of good places to ride to/from.
If you want to own a home, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Philly, and the surrounding suburbs, are still probably better bet. A much better bet.
I find the discussion of west philly safety kind of hilarious. When I bike commute, I ride to/from Upper Darby to Center City.

He then proceeded to quote a price of 15 bucks. That kinda gives you an idea of how much they charge for work. They dont have much in stock there, but what they do have is pretty cheap. And yes, the neighborhood IS pretty sketchy. Lancaster Ave. is riddled with useful shops, and I live Right there on 40th, but I still dont like going up that way after dark. SOmehow I dont get a good feeling when every store closes promptly at 5:00 and ALL have metal gates to roll down in front of the windows.

i stopped into frankenstein one time, searching for one of those pocket u-locks, because every other place was out of stock. we chatted for a minute, i was unaware with his reputation, he starts rambling off about his company, and ebay, and how bike companies weigh their bikes without pedals and he weighs them with pedals. i dont even know. but i paid for the lock, and started to walk out of the creepy basement, which is his shop and he started to ask me if i wanted a job, saying i could work fulltime putting bikes together. he just seemed really lonely.

via is wierd. sometimes the guys are nice and really helpfull othertimes the same guys are arrogant and snobby. Dont' buy a brooks from there, so expensive. trophy is pretty good the guys are nice and priced pretty well. the bike line is like every other bike line in the nation.
As for people getting robbed on 34th, it was probly their own fault. talking on cell phones with thier heads up thier ass drunk at 2am. i live in north philly and as long as you act smart and dont' do anything stupid like walk around at 2am with your cell phone out, you should be fine. my gf lives in west philly around 35th and arch and its not to bad around there.

Dude, those aren't dilapidated houses, they are projects. Penn can't buy those. And the neighborhood East of 41st, south of Lancaster and not the actual PJ's is blowing up. Some nice places for cheap, but not cheap for long. I have a ton of friends who live around there.

My first bike from via was some unnamed french frame lemony green ss w/ cram grips.
It was wierd because it had this detachable top tube- so you could convert it between a boys or girls bike.

Roxborough... houses are reasonably price since the area has been 'up and coming' for some time now... I have a friend who bought a twin there for around $170... sold it less than a year later (moved out of state)... made $20 on it... I bought a twin up in roxy for a little over $210... 4 bedrooms, hardwoods... real sweet...
PLUS.. you're right next to wissahickon park (mtb trails, forbidden drive), the schuylkill river trail, manayunk, bike paths (art museaum loop), hills (lots of hills), etc....
Human Zoom in manayunk is a good shop - friendly service, good deals... Cadence in manayunk is alright (good mechanics, but pricey). Human Zoom has a great deal - $60 for a 5yr service warrantee type thing... pay your $60, for the next 5 yrs you get unlimited tune ups and free labor on everything. Basically, I buy parts somewhere else (or there), they install for free. awesome.
