Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Remember when

skateboarding went from a sport that actually moved to a sport where everybody stood in one spot doing flippy tricks? I hated that. It was a sad day for me. I always liked the motion aspect of it. It was so much more fun to move.
Not to sound like a whiner or anything, but I have to make a note of the fact that a lot more threads in the FG forum these days are more concerned with silly tricks rather than actually moving on the bike.
Maybe I'm just in a bad mood, but perusing this forum lately just makes me feel like I got the butter but lost the bread. The bread was what made the butter taste good. Opinions? Thoughts?

Bikes: yes

i know what you mean.

for me the catalyst was last week's absurd proliferation of metathreads. threads about other threads. made me want to stab myself in the face, but i didn't, because i'm beautiful. are we talking about bikes, or are we talking about how we talk about bikes?

skateboarding didn't GO from a sport where people moved to one where people stood and did flip tricks...there were a lot of posers who couldn't ride for **** in the streets, but were still standing there trying kickflips to no avail...otherwise, tricks were only a honing of board control and mufukers (us at least) would RIDE

to each their own tho...

I enjoy riding fixie, cause I don't have to go far to have fun...'s like a speed bike, and a kiddy/fun bike at the same time... when I want to blast miles and miles through the city, I can...when I wanna just go outside and have a little fun in a parking lot, I can

I was referring to street skating. I never had any problem with freestyle personally, but I have to say this. If you don't like going places on a bike and worry more about your backward circles or the kevin bacon dismount than your ability to go places fast and far:
A) go BMX flatland or...
B) Breakdance

I have a feeling y'all are going to come at me out of the woodwork now.

haha, if someone tries to defend practicing stupid bike tricks over becoming a faster rider with more stamina, then i will attempt to assemble a mob to go take their bike (that they don't deserve to own) from them.

You know, as someone who used to ride flatland I always thought it was kind of silly for people to be attempting all these tricks on fixies. To each their own, I suppose..

again..to each their own

have you seen that clip of those fixed gear dancers on super small gear ratios that do all that crazy shiet? if someone's down with that, so be it

I hope you're not arguing, tho, that there's something wrong with spending lots of time practicing stuff that increases your control/balance/ and familiarity with your bike. If so, then I disagree

If Imma be spending so and so amount of time on my saddle and be nice as hell doing miles and miles or slithering through city traffic, I wanna be able to do some tricks that are fun and show how much skill I've acquired in investing time on my bicycle (if not to others, to myself)...not to mention increasing my ability

is there any good pro point guard that CAN't spin the ball on their finger?

Yesterday when I was out RIDING, two cute girls gave a nice smile and said "hello". I didn't even have to trackstand with a beer and a cigarette. I was on my roadbike too for that matter.
Don't get me wrong people, I'm not saying there is anything wrong with tricks or partying. I've been known to do both. It's just that most threads these days have nothing to do with riding your gosh darn bike. Give me back my bread!

being serious, there's not much you can post about bread though. how many " cor i knocked out 46miles today and my average cadence was 156.3332" can there be before this turns into the road bikes forum?

also some people want to learn tricks on their track bikes, and where better to ask than a place filled with fixed riders?

i'm 100% for having a good time on my bike in whatever form that might take. sometimes that might be hauling ass through traffic, and sometimes it might be going out onto the end of a pier in Red Hook looking out over New York Harbor and practicing trackstands and backward circles. i used to ride BMX. i enjoy trying to bring some of those tricks and skills over to fixed. if you have a problem with how i enjoy my bike, then tough **** cause you're obviously the one that doesn't know what this is all about... having a good time.

I can't do many tricks. My tricks mainly consist of snazzy dismounts, and they only work when I'm NOT trying to impress anyone. The second I think someone is looking and I'm gonna impress em with my grace and dexterity I fall on my face. I'm like the invisible boy in Mystery Men who could only turn invisible when no one was looking.

Anyway most women are more impressed by great legs than stupid tricks. Tricks are best used to impress little kids.

I raced bmx back in '83 till '85 and then everyone, including myself, got into freestyle trick riding. I got into mountain biking in the early '90s which at that time was about going for long rides off road. Now, everybody wants to "freeride", which is basically just jumping around doing tricks. I totally respect the freestylers and freeriders for the things they do, and I too know a few tricks, but you have to wonder if it comes out of being too lazy to go for a real ride.
As for impressing the ladies, in my experience, girls always check out guys on bikes.

You are correct sir, I have no idea what it's all about.
Let's get back to talking about stash pockets.
