Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

My friend had an axel crap out on his KHS, assuming those are the same. To be fair, he was mess'ing every workday, in Ottawa winters, so they were covered in road salt all the time. I think he got under 2 month's use. But for $75, that isn't bad, considering it will get you started, if you dont already have a fixie. You can always rebuild as needed.

i'd be wary...

you get what you pay for
buy it nice or buy it twice

etc. etc.

you know, i'd do it if you think you'll be able to afford a more expensive wheelset later. if those last you, it's a great deal. if not, you'd better be ready to replace them.

I started riding fixed on a KHS and the stock wheels lasted me about 2 months... If this deal is coming with the same lockring, you'll have to replace the lockring. The lockring that came with mine was crap. Also, the auction says that the wheels would cost you $200 at a shop.... For about $250, I got a set of surly hubs laced to ma3. If you're looking for some wheels on the cheap, DW sells some wheels on the side.

I bought a cheap set of wheels to start off, and granted I'm still a beginner, but I know that so far I've been putting in 20 miles a day several days a week and I can feel that the wheels aren't so cool with that....I don't know if that's a lot of miles, but I like to ride pretty hard and I'm definitely gonna be upgrading as my next step. I'm thinking Kogswell flip flop laced to Velocity aerohead for the rear...not sure about the front, maybe match it with the same rim and a different hub.

Anyway, had I known what I was getting myself into, I would have done way more research and would have definitely spent considerably more on my wheels. Not something you want to do on the cheap, but I guess it's ok to get you into the whole thing.

they're certainly cheap. for the price they'll be serviceable for a while. decent for a beater.
recpack them when you get them, adjust the bearings properly, and make sure your cog/lockring setup is tight tight tight.

i sold my used, partially stripped KHS wheelset for more than that.

for triple that price you could get a much better wheelset.

I used to ride on those on my beater conversion. They were okay, but could stand for improvement. Got the job done tho.

my coworker has those two exact same wheels right now in his cubicle, taken immediately off a mercier he just got. they are pretty awful.

the bearings feel like rocks when you spin the wheels. i'd stay away.
