but really, be careful in any fight. your first defense should always be to escape.

i don't trust that carotid artery thing. maybe just because i think of it as a movie move and therefore fake. that uppercut sounds good, though.

i don't get in fights, but i'm not a big guy, so i have to know those sort of tricks to be on a level playing field with macho, overly agressive alpha male type *******s like the dude in those pictures.

on mace/pepper spray:
seriously..
bad idea

so you mace the driver and what do you get?
a pissed off, 3000 pound, BLIND rolling cage of death,

if you're anywhere close enough to spray a driver,
that driver could inadvertantly run you over,
OR, hit another car/pedestrian/biker

you sure you wanna mess with that?

A palm strike can be awesome devastating when done right. I switch to those during sparring if I've been wearing the knuckles' skin thin in Karate. I like them better than a regular punch. A good palm to the clavicle.... snap, crack or pop. ...

AVOID THE FIGHT AT ALL COSTS..... despite macho posteuring...walking away is the only everyone wins.

Was that spraying a movin' driver?...... that does sound crazy.

if you condition the outer-cutting edge of your palm, and you practice, it will work. BUT, it's probably not the first move i'd use in a situation that required self-defense. the uppercut is good, and as TRaffic Jammer pointed out, that pressure point on the lip just underneath the nose is *very* sensitive.

it's funny how this is turning into a 'how to kick ass if necessary' thread.

Where did you get that from? Mace is to immobilize someone trying to physically assault you, not to spray people while they're driving. The idiot cyclist who did that would probably be held liable for everything the motorist hit, and rightly so. In the case of this messenger in Toronto, I'd say the dude deserved a faceful, (but only after exiting the vehicle, of course. ;) )

slvoid 01-27-06 01:24 PM

Don't forget knee/fist/foot/elbow/u-lock/any blunt object to the groin. I have this video of a whole bunch of MMA fighters getting taken down that way..

TRaffic Jammer 01-27-06 01:26 PM

An arterial strike can never be considered defensive IMHO. UNLESS you are in a fight for your life, and willing to kill. If one trains the amount of non-destructive ow-ow-ow one can inflict is considerable. Nerve strikes and pressure points are much preferred to bouncing buddy's noodle off the sidewalk which is what is more likely to happen on the street, either that or getting booted in the head.

yeah, it kind of is. hmmm...but yeah, while it's good to know how to defend yourself, the best defense is to not get in a fight at all.

i wouldn't use that carotid thing period...even if it can work. the uppercut would only come out if i got really pissed off and wanted to break a couple of teeth, just to...you know. break a couple of the guy's teeth.

but pressure points are really the best. just stun someone, just keep them from damaging you.

Wow. I walked by this right after it happened. I had no idea.
I saw the messanger talking to the police but that was it.
The market seems like the weirdest place for that to happen.

He's just damned lucky he didn't get destroyed there in Kensington Market... them's good folks there that aren't going to stand for some guy trying to beat down a girl.

STEEKER 01-27-06 01:54 PM

Just look at the a_holes face ,for sure he has a mental condition,, a major jerk mister toughy for picking on a girl that prick is marked now, and the Messenger girl is a sweety she waved to me a couple of times on the road

rvabiker 01-27-06 03:27 PM

I think the UB reference was refering to not wanting to fight...a political stab if you will.

For anyone who's interested, the courier, Leah, has written some comments on the original photo blog link page.

Sympathy declining:

He was driving and opened his door (while driving) and yelling profanities he threw his beef patty on a bun out of his door. I walked over to his car, and right or wrong, I opened the door and "gave" him back his food (which he MUST have dropped by accident!) He then lost it, and jumped out of his car and threw 2 large Timmies at meand then grabbed me by my helmet and tried to toss me around a bit.It was at that point that my bike lock key (that I wear on a bracelet around my wrist) scratched his car. I have read all the postings about people sympathetic to the car driver due to the expense of repairing the scratch but sorry folks, i doubt that it will cost him anything to repair as it was a 1.2cm mark in the clearcoat only(did not damage the paint) but regardless a scratch none the less. Then with some "encouraging" from some helpfull bystanders he got in his car and drove away...or so I thought! People were comming up to me and saying that I should have him charged but at that point I just figured I had made my anti-littering point and and eye for and eye with the coffee shower, I mean I did throw that patty right. But just as I was getting on my bike to ride home he came running back and thats when the photos start. He had driven half a block and decided that the scratch was worthy of a more thorough beating I guess.
Now for a bit of clarity on a couple of things...
The blonde girl is his girlfriend...she also makes a pretty good shield from an angry mob!
I was NOT punching anyone! especially not with keys in my hand! I was just trying to save my bike (I just built it a week ago!!)
And as for the police charging him....
He took off in his car as soon as he heard the sirens....they chased him down but it is not a crime to leave the scene. They were going to charge him with a variety of things including assult with a weapon x2, mischief x2, aggravated assult, etc, but the police informed me that if I went ahead and placed those charges then they would have to charge me with mischeif for the scratch.
So in the interests of good karma (and my own sanity) I have opted to "let it go" and allow the universe to repay this angermanagement case in its own way.
And finally to those who say that i must have had a sudden case of self ritousness in regard to littering.....YOU ARE WRONG! I hate littering and NEVER do> In fact I am constantly picking up litter and make my son pick up litter at the park. I just feel that it is such a fixable issue in the world today. If everyone would not throw their own piece of litter then there would be none!! What a concept eh!?
enjoy the beautiful winter riding!

She makes a point to go out of her way to throw food at a guy who was already "screaming profanities"? That doesn't seem particularly bright to me.

jyossarian 01-27-06 06:10 PM

WTF, that guy's mentally deranged if he throws away a perfectly good beef patty w/ coco bread. As for Leah, I still think she should've pulled a Tie Domi on him. Or at least charged him. She could've argued successfully regarding the scratch. The other guy couldn't have got off so easy w/ all the aggravated assaults, menacing, etc.

mcatano 01-27-06 06:16 PM

Regardless of the potential legalities, the rightness or wrongness of any of it, the fact that he's clearly a grade-a ******, and everything else, the simple fact is that she - by her own admission - picked a fight that she clearly had no chance of winning. This doesn't seem like a genius move. If buddy hucks a sack of white castle out his window and brains her, that's one thing, but playing litter vigilante in Toronto traffic is a totally different story. That's a recipe for getting your face caved in, McSorely vs Brashear style.

Nebulae 01-27-06 06:17 PM

I should read first.. seriously

Msngr 01-27-06 06:35 PM

SERIOUSLY..how can you say that?
sometimes people actually make faces like that without posing. ******.

sorry about going south with that post, but really. . .

Like I said in the other thread.. those are some of the worst "Im mad" expressions ever.

We always have earnest expressions like that in Canada, even when we're road ragin'.

Check out hool's portfolio. He shoots with a Canon 5D (digital SLR) so these aren't "casual passer by" photos. The guys a stone pro with a camera that's worth twice what my car is.
