Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? anyone else here seen "Dark"?

so i was in Hollywood Video the other night and i see this movie called "Dark" with a picture of a messenger on his bike on the cover... figure i might have scored something cool

well if anyone else has thought about renting it, in my opinion don't bother.

first, the movie is about an hour and 45 minutes. he works as a bike messenger in chicago for a living and goes to college. there is one 1min 20sec segment during the beginning where he and another messenger take off through town, then there's a 30sec clip at the end of him on his bike being introspective. as far as scenes on a bike, or having to do with a bike, that's IT. the rest of the time the bike sits in his house... he even WALKS everywhere, store, class, etc (college student). and if you are wondering his bike isn't even fixed... his buddy's is, but not his.

second, it's boooooooooring. it's about a struggling college student in chicago who's life is basically worthless, the whole movie is him worrying about his girlfriend, getting drunk in his apt by himself, riding around (in a car) with friends, and doing poorly in school. i must say it's shot well and as far as i can tell, well acted, though i can't say it should have been too much of a stretch for anyone... it's just for me personally it was a realistic story about a realistic guy with realistic problems... whoopie. i have my own life for that.

anyway, that's my $.02. i would have rather spent the time riding.

From: south side, you got a problem with that?
aren't the cars facing the wrong way (like you aussies do) in the cover photo? i see a white line on the street, so i assumed it was one way, but then i noticed that those two cars on the left seem to be facing the other way.

if that's so, not a good sign.

Someone (I think monkey) posted almost the same thing about a year ago. I thought this was the old thread revived. Deja vu.

maybe someone thinks it's pretty good, and maybe it is a good film, but i think we'd all get our hopes raised by the cover and be pissed that there are no fixies or messengers in the movie.

oooh...someone should write a messenger movie. better than quicksilver.

weird thing about the cover - i looked at this at my local vid store. if i remember correctly he's got a da7600 front hub and 'horns on a road bike. not saying you can't
