Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

The Cat in the Hat

I was reading this book, first published in 1957, tonight and noticed that page 2 contains a drawing of a left-side drive fixed gear with no brakes.

I guess there's a little bit of Sheldon Brown in Dr. Seuss, or vice versa.

It wasn't until I had children did I realize that Dr. Suess was a genius.

Bikes: surly steamroller w/coaster brake, electra single speed cruiser, specialized rockhopper commuter, no-name single speed folder, 700c ultimate wheel, 24" unicycle, specialized bmx lsd, single seat single speed huffy tandem, pink upsidedown parade bike

Speaking of SS/FG in literature, Curious George Rides A Bike was my favorite book when I was little.

He not only rode a single speed (no front brake, probably coaster rear), but had a messenger bag and mad trick skills. Plus there were instructions for how to make an origami boat out of a sheet of newspaper. If only all books were that good.

I cringe thinking of how freaking terrible the Curious George movie is going to be when it comes out later this month.

My hero.
Dig the radial laced 15 spoke front wheel. No wonder it taco'd when he hit a rock and he had to ride a wheelie all the way home.

its also got both crankarms on the right side and no chainstays. lugged, but doesn't look like it would be very stiff. the geometry is pretty weird.

Maybe you don't understand what Suess is trying to do in If I Ran the Zoo. Read up here and you may realize that he isn't a racist.

Here's some more on the subject. Seuss was in fact not a racist.

have you seen the stuff he did during world war II? they were cartoons for newspapers...his pictures of japanese people just LOOKED racist...then throw in good old jingoism, and it's sometimes shocking to think that the guy who wrote "horton hears a who" could draw those cartoons. there's a whole book of it, i wish i could remember what it's called.

The stuff he did as war propoganda could be construed as racist, his children's books on the other hand were not racist. I believe the book you're looking for is Dr. Seuss Goes to War.

[edit]Here's an online catalogue of his political cartoons during WWII.[/edit]
[edit2]Including some anti-racism ones.[/edit2]

Me too. Once I saw they'd added a forelock to make him look more child-like, I knew it was doomed.

yeah, an example...

i'll have to check out the anti-racist ones...one concession worth making is that working as a propaganda cartoonist, he naturally had to lean unnaturally to one side.

Interpretative framework my ass, racism is racism, i've read theories about cat in the hat being a metaphor for african american's moving into white neighborhoods and the government(the machine) having to fix things for the minorities, i don;t know, the more i think about it the more it makes sense, especially if you've ever heard the book on tap version

Truly the media that he had in mind when he wrote it, no doubt.

Also, One Fish Two Fish is about the the Catholic church's domination of Central America.

What?

I feel that books on tape bring it all back to our rich oral tradition.

Or something.
