Sweet Barca picks, i havent seen any people riding fixed here in Madrid and Toledo, infact i havent seen many riders period. There is a velodrome about 5 minutes walk from my apartment.

There are many cycling enthusiasts, both road and mountain, but not so many "utilitarian cyclists" except in Barcelona, Cordoba, Sevilla, and some other towns...
Bicycles have multiplied in Barcelona over the last 5 years or so. It's great to see so many people commuting by bike. There is an ever expanding network of bike lanes, but they tend to be pretty worthless from my point of view; they are very poorly designed and can be more dangerous than the car lanes. The biggest danger in Barcelona are neither cars nor peds, but motorcycles and mopeds ridden by teenagers.

The people in the pics riding fixed gear bikes were from out of town. They came over for an alleycat a couple of weekends ago. There are some Barcelona fixed gear riders but they are all foreigners. Fixed gear hasn't caught on yet. There is a velodrome in town (from the 92 olympics) but I haven't checked it out yet.

Went for a mid day ride during work friday, not always like this, but this road floods often, and even though closed until water subsides, it's still ridable with a inch of water flowing across it for a few hundred feet. Few spots where it get dicey but, eh, I can swim.

Looks like Mordor

LóFarkas 11-13-06 07:24 AM

What's going on in that pic? There is the orange/red monster cloud, ok... but how can the lower part of the sky be such an ordinary gray? Or is that not the sky?
BTW, great photos, both this one and the sunrise.

theritor 11-13-06 12:49 PM

its a setting sun lighting the underside of the clouds.

LóFarkas 11-13-06 01:20 PM

Oh wow, who would have thought...

Whenever there's such a dramatic sunset, the whole sky is somewhat orage in my experience...

Freedom Plaza in DC on my way to Polo about a month ago.

I'm moving back to Philly at the end of December, and I'm gonna miss DC so much. If any of you are ever offered a chance to live there, TAKE IT. You will never regret living in such a fun city with such amazing people.

San Diego sunset from my parents' backyard. Not as menacing as the first sunset, though.

Thanks! We don't get that sort of sunset effect very often, so I made sure I got a photo. The sun was behind the mountains, and we had a high pressure ridge coming in from the west. I wish I had been up a little higher, then I could have caught the orange glow just above the mountains, fading into a deep blue, then the sharp change to Demon Pumpkin. In the winter, we get Chinooks, which produce a huge arch of grey [sometimes dark bluish] cloud from horizon to horizon, followed by an intense blue sky. The air temperature can increase by 20C/36F in a matter of a couple of hours.

girona 11-13-06 02:36 PM

Yes, the topography in Spain is quite varied as you can see in the map.
