EDIT: I'm actually thinking of the State Theatre - different place. Nevermind.

Here we go:

Not the best pic.

333m of buttery smooth goodness in the shadow of Doi Sutep. They've rented the storage spaces and offices as apartments. I have to carry my bike through passages underneath the stands and passed drying laundry to get in. I'm not sure what will happen if I ever get caught.

Beautiful Finland

Imagine; these beautiful sights are only a dozen kilometers away from the center of Helsinki. And you can get there on bike, on safe bikepaths.

Isn't Finland great?

Of course it looks beautiful when you crank up the saturation like that!

I didn't crank up anything. This is how the photos were taken by the camera, without any processing. And they look exactly like they were in real life.

Maybe you got way too much smog where you live, so you just can't discern the natural light anymore. Anyway, this is how clean air looks like.

SuperVillain 01-29-08 12:31 PM

dammit.

I wanna go to Finland now.

I live in the Blue Ridge mountain area so we have pretty clean air up here, too. It's just not quite so green as that.

curiousincident 01-29-08 12:34 PM

Hey, maybe we're proud of our pollution. Screw the stars man, I want city glow; I want my water so nasty that my children have extra digits; I wanna be able to suck on an exhaust pipe at every red light and then mash up the steepest hill in the city! Did that ever occur to you, Mr. Myhomelandissomuchcleanerthanyours? Yeah. I hope all of our smog drifts across the Atlantic to your front door, maybe then you'll gain an appreciation of how awesome pollution really is.

You know that was 100% not serious, right? I mean, just making sure.

Finland looks kickass.

F*ck you - I gots you on my sh*tlist now, byatch! No backpedaling!

EDIT: by the way, you used to have another avatar up until recently - a spider-kind-of-thingy, if I recall correctly? That was cool.

Suttree 01-29-08 01:27 PM

Just curious how much daylight do y'all have up in Finland?
Not that I get that much myself--spending all frickin day inside
an office and going out after the sun goes down.

As is normal in nordic countries, summers are very sunny, with several days of nonstop sun (even here in Helsinki, and this is the southernmost city). The winters are not so sunny... but we never get 100% dark days, ever. So, all in all, we come out ahead, I'd say.

curiousincident 01-29-08 03:45 PM

Finally on somebody's ****list here! About time. It was actually some weird moustache thing that was mostly indecipherable cause of how small it was.

That's interesting though, I guess I never realized Helsinki was far enough north to get the nonstop sun in the summer. What's it like during that time of the year? Do people make a big deal out of it or not so much? I've also heard about the unacclimated getting mad depressed during the winter.

wroomwroomoops, All our monitors see your beautiful roll as subjectively as we please. Finland looks lush and regarding saturatioin....we could all use some. roll on

My Helsinki looks so much different from his but maybe that's just me? Or that my camera sucks?

Well, it's not like at noon but it's very light nonetheless, even when you can't see the sun - it's behind the horizon but very shallowly. This lasts for about a month if I recall correctly. People make absolutely no big deal out of it. They like it, though, I can tell you that, but it's really accepted as part and parcel of living here.

Depression during the winter: it happens to some people, and it doesn't have to be a foreigner - finns can get depressed during the winter, too. I am lucky in that way, I'm just too busy to get depressed, I guess.
They have these neon lights that you put on the table and apparently help a lot to reduce this depression.

My wife and I took a short ride on the new local trail and I brought a small camera along. It said 43°F but I think we were being lied to.

patrick07 03-12-08 08:43 PM

A few more of the same ride. Aside for a few couples walking dogs and three other people on bikes, it looked a lot like the bottom two pictures.

Wow. North American tourist towns can be scary places.
Maybe I'll go hang out at Castle Dracula. They sound like good people.
