What are you riding your bike on the freeway for?! Is there a bike section of road?

That is actually the only section (about 5 miles) of freeway in california that i am aware of that it is legal to ride through. reason being there are absolutely no other routes in that area. there still isnt a bike lane though and you have to ride on the shoulder. pretty scary so not something id do on a regular basis, but i thought it'd be fun to get a picture of it. freeways are LOUD and debris flies fast. best (and only) 146 mile self supported ride ive ever done.

diff_lock2 03-16-08 03:14 PM

Yeah I once got lost on a bike trip and ended up on the high way (coasted down one of those ramps), I had to turn around and ride against traffic on the edge of the highway, I shat my pants.

Here I am standing next to a column donated to Chicago by Mussolini in the '30s. It is remarkable that it was not destroyed during WWII; the inscription reads: "This column, twenty centuries old, was erected on the beach of Ostia, the port of Imperial Rome, to watch over the fortunes and victories of the Roman triremes. Fascist Italy, with the sponsorship of Benito Mussolini, presents to Chicago a symbol and memorial in honor of the Atlantic Squadron led by Balbo, which with Roman daring, flew across the ocean in the 11th year of the Fascist era." Craziness!

I don't have the digital camera on me today, so no pictures from my commute home, though I will try to get some pictures at tonight's Critical Mass.

Here in Montreal a huge portrait of him survives in a church. There's no fuss about it either. The Italians still admire Mussolini, at least an uncomfortable majority of them, as evidenced by these stamps of his "legacy" that somehow persist. I'm guessing Chicago's Italian community had a lot to do with keeping the column up. Anyway...interesting stuff.

Balbo, the heroic squadron leader. Heh, fascist narratives seem like they're written by 5 year-olds who've watched too many cartoons.

Odaiba in Tokyo. It's crowded during the day, but very nice at night. You can ride across the Rainbow Bridge (in the background), the water bus (funny looking boat on the lower right), or ride the long way round through Toyosu. http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/j...ntman7/044.jpg

^^ Man that's gorgeous, ever since I was a kid I have had an obsession with Odaiba. If/when I go to Tokyo I am going there first and walking every square inch of walkable area on the place. More pics ploz?
