Chrome Shins Cycling knickers

I just found these on their website. Anybody have a pair of these? How are they? They seem a little pricey at $125, but if they last half as long as their bags they would be worth it. I like the way they look too.

Check 'em out

i would wear those- although i could get by with 20 pairs of cut-off thrift store fatigues for the same price.

they'll get a lot of stupid people's money.

they're asking you to pay them 120 bucks so that you can wrap the lower half of your body in plastic.

those freakin' photos on that page...who sees that and goes "oh man, i could look so COOL!"?

but then, maybe i'm being too harsh. let the free market decide. capitalism and blahblahblah.

i'm sure there's a handful of cyclists who need to get rid of that kind of money.

Wow! I don't think they're that expensive. Under the Weather has similar pants that were even more expensive, but didn't look as good. A lot of cycling shorts are much, much more than that. Not very many of which are made here in the US (this is an assumption).

You'll spend excessive amounts of money on bombroof hubs, rims, and/or toe straps, but you won't spend $125 on some functional bombproof knickers?

They have 9% Spandex in them, so they aren't going to feel like plastic and might even be comfortable. There is even a chamois so your gooch and testes can be comfortable too. If they are comfy and durable, then they are definitely worth it.

go spend your 120 bucks on something worthwhile....or if you still feel the need for expensive pants check out the Roach line of biking clothes... quite possibly the the toughest pants ever...they prevent roadrash and still look as good as when i bought them.

"excessive" in terms of pants is one thing. a couple pairs of $5 thrift store jeans will last as long as these things.

"excessive" in terms of rims or hubs? the difference between a $20 rim and a $50 rim becomes evident really quickly if you jump curbs, or ride anything other than pavement. the only way the purchase of something like a phil hubset becomes "excessive" is if the person buying doesn't use them until they die.

The things I spend lots of money on are totally cool. The things you spend lots of money on suck.

Take $20 pair of ripstop nylon BDUs. Cut off at mid shin. Use excess material to patch ass. Spray with silicone waterproofing.

Repeat as required.

I saw these today in the flesh at NYCvelo - they look like nice pants. Shop owner was saying that the margin isn't too good on them at the list price, so they are probably well made and expensive to manufacture. The under the weather pants were not great in my opinion. I ordered a pair and sent them back. They looked like Star Trek pants. I thought the chrome pants looked good. If you have the $ and the inclination...

i was fooling around with a citizen today and was struck, as every who owns one is, with the thought that went into that bag. like the guys at chrome looked at every bag they'd ever had and thought about all the niggles with each and then fixed them. which is why it's a $130 bag.

reading what it says on the site seems they've thought these through too. one of my main niggles with regular pants, especially when it's cold, is that they ride down and your shirt rides up. well these are higher in the back to compensate that. and the rest: 4-way stretch, mid-weight, highly wind resistant, and breathable. Water resistant and quick drying. Features include cargo pockets, articulated knees, zippered fly, belt loops, lightly padded moisture wicking chamois seat. Lifetime guarantee.

all this was the kind of stuff that was getting posted in my "what would you look for in cycling gear" thread. of course that's gonna cost a few more bucks than surplus fatigues or thrift store levi's.

but if these are as well thought out and enduring as the bags they'be gotta be worth it

do we know where they're made?

hey ink1373, if youre inclined, do some research on the ethical/eco impact/pharma aspects of the cotton-growing industry, if you haven't already. ****ing eye-opening man, or at least sure was to me, how a material we're given to believe is natural etc is anything but.

also, apropos of the ethics of this subject, was just thinking about wearing army surplus. swordsto ploughshares or supporting the complex? i dunno man, just crossed my mind.

last thing, as cyclists we're a small group, and economics dictate that to make stuff that meets the rigorous demands of a minority is gonna cost more than your basic levi's.

Bikes: 80's Hoffy track frame 49x15, 80's guerciotti track 47x15(destroyd by a car), '78 ross conversion(RIP, died of old age), '06 fuji track(RIP, hit by a trolley), '75 Alan Aluminum(in the works)

i believe it's a lot cheaper to just take a pair of worn out too short jeans and cutt them off right above the knee and your good to go

A friend of mine here in MO just got a pair of these and really likes them. I have a pair of the Under the Weather pants and find them to be fantastic. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Also yes.

It isn't just a matter of getting nice riding pants. It's a matter of getting nice riding pants that are designed and manufactured by small, independent operations and people that you know and want to support. Under the Weather is a cool company, as is Chrome. Yeah, you could just cutoff cheap pants (which I also do), but the end result is not the same. If you don't like the price, don't buy 'em. If you see more value in these, as something grown out of a community and produced by people like us, then maybe they're worth paying for. You're call. I like them.
