glad more people joined! what a happy thing to find on an unhappy valentines day morning. i hope all of you have girls or boys to kiss and feel lovey with.

as for neighborhoods and multiple people occupying the spaces within them: you are all welcome to pool your tidbits of literary and liquory knowledge together to make for one comprehensive study of your streets and buildings, etc. im sure we all kind of figured that there'd be more than just one definitive person to tackle each 'hood. we could even separate the mission up a bit, you know. like one person could stick to just the 3 or 4 blocks around his/her house (assuming there is either a bar or a bookstore). also the mission could sort of be compartmentalized into different missions, ie: valencia street varies widely from south van ness... from 14th to 20th is a lot different than 25th to 35th... we need people well versed with the verse and vodka of each distinct little plot of land. (just so long as we end up in dolores park -- either atop "the box" or "the boat" and have some sun and beer!)

welcome new people! you don't need to ride a track bike, you don't need to be well read or a pure drunk. you should have some interest in the latter two (this is only a rule so that you won't be bored to death).

that weekend in march is starting to look ideal. save march 11th please! save it.

sounds like a plan i take the bars and you can do books. i think katio is in as well for mission, so maybe we can extend our radius to include potrero hill?
*girlish squeal* this is going to be so much fun!

PS: "toughness" is now dropped as a pre-requisite, though it is still wholly invited.

anyone else from lower haight / alamo square / panhandle area?

I've got a couple of obscure drinking spots, but could use some
help on the literary side of things. (my "bookstore" is the Main Library)

either way, this is going to be great.

p.s. yes, definitely freewheel hayes. Travis & co are THEE best.

we might not be doing this nowish, as an organized group type thing, but surely you can splinter off on your own or with another friend and start your "research" today, tomorrow, or any day.

the weather is delicious, and shouldn't be wasted.

I'm definitely in for the rides!

My neighborhood is potrero/dogpatch and I'm not much of a tourguide, but I know all the spots for cheap/killer food! Take a peak at https://www.foodhos.com

The only issue is the hills.. I'm riding 46x17 as well and totally have to grind up the hills!!

Just email/PM me if you guys do it

I'm in, but only as a tourist...unless y'all want to ride across the bridge and I can give you the full Oakland tour. As for toughness...that depends on the bike...hard to be tough on a folder, but I should have the IRO built up in a week...I'm afraid the Masi is on its last legs.

can the masi be revived? i bet even her last legs are slim-ankled and sexy!

i think you'd have to ride the folder, just so we could have one along with us. more than likely this would be mandatory.

possibly...I'll probably keep 'er around as a beater. Needs work, though. I got it used with a sketchy fork and lots of dents in the seat tube. Replaced fork w/ an equally sketchy (but steel, not carbon) fork, thrashed the headset, put a few more dents in the tubes, and a couple of weeks ago had it in a repair stand (no seatpost, so by the seat tube) and someone ran into it, crunching the tube pretty bad. I was going to take it over to
Alameda for the bernie treatment, but a new fork, hs, and seat tube would cost me more than the IRO, so I went that path and will either have bernie fix it, or just make me a full custom if it seems like a better option in the next couple of months and have the IRO as the workbike, round-towner.

no way man, the folder is as tough as a bat with nails through it... the folder is the quiet kid in the gang that everyone is scared of because no one really knows what's really going on with him. no one suspects it really, but its always that kid that comes out screaming and punching when the fight starts going down. that folder is going to earn us some serious street cred!

the iro is welcome too. sorry to hear about the sad masi. if anyone can revamp it, bernie's the dude.

Books and Bikes!?! I am in! My neighborood is already taken, but I am happy to go along for the ride. While I am big reader, I am still an amazon troll, so it will be fun to learn the bookstores in the city better.

Disclaimer: snowboarding and/or school might force me to drop out depending on the date

More interest is pouring in,,, where are you 46x17?

As for being interested but maybe not being in attendance, it's possible to pull this knowledge into a little book-formed thingy. I have ample access to copiers and paper here at the office, and mounds and mounds of time on my hands. When this tour thing is done I can pull all the information into a sort of collected collection, staple it together and call it a "zine". We can ask the neighborhood guides to provide us a little one page review of each spot they are offering to us, and perhaps this thing will be neat!

Books and Beer go hand in hand. This is getting more and more fun!

i live in the tl, and i highly recommend one place for literature. i think it's on geary, they're called "magazines", and they have a range of.. guess? ..magazines! yes, magazines, from every era. actually, more than 1/2 the store is devoted to gay porn mags/videos. good articles, etc etc.

dude, that spot is the best there ever (aside from their having the largest and widest selection of gay porn). not to mention, right next door is the fish and chips place (which, by the way, delivers to the edinburgh castle! the lady walks the damned fish and chips wrapped in news paper down the damned alley and brings them to you while you drink a beer... cant get better, really).

that fish and chips spot combo'ed with the castle is reason enough to visit larkin and geary. however, if you notice the sign on the fish and chips spot close, you will see that there is a circular hole of about 10 inches in diameter that is totally open at all times. this worries me, considering the amount of rodent traffic on the streets around there... however, the food is excellent, and they walk it over to the bar for you, so its one of those things you just sort of have to put out of your mind while enjoying the whole experience.
