Proper cog installation

I've gotten to the point on my first fixed gear road conversion where I am installing the 13 tooth cog onto what will be a suicide hub. My question, what is the proper installation of the cog? I assume the side with the flange should be installed toward the hub but if I install it opposite of that my chainline is better. Am I right, the side stamped with the manufacturer info normally faces out?

Bikes: officially too many now...

the flange/lip goes toward to center of the hub. grease those threads! install with god's torque. then grease and install your lockring. again, tight.

That makes sense to me but do you know why it must be installed that way?

Re: the grease and Loctite, I understand. Thanks.

the flange makes sure that the chain and the spokes don't interact. also, it gives a surface for the lockring to interact with.

i'd suggest working with your chainring and cranks to get the chainline rather than install a cog backwards.
