Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

But still a great article:

The women sell the shampoo in local markets, or to tourists.

But they also use the device for more exotic purposes.

"My personal opinion is that the best margaritas in the world come off a bicycle blender," Watkiss says.

....

The pedal powered machines include one that stips the kernels off maize cobs and grinds them into meal — a task often previously done with two stones or a hand-turned mill.

"This makes the difference between spending weeks on getting your corn ground, and a day or two," Watkiss says.
And my coworkers were just making fun of me for talking about a stolen bicycle barbeque in Austin...

I have seen one like these (looking like a complete bike form 20'. funny brakes included) in Toulouse, France at a flea market. The ingenious gearbox provided the power either to the rear wheel (fixed!) or to the sharpening stone. Sort of regret I haven't bought it then.

that would make for a gnarly accident if it got switched mid ride.
