a very good point, and weighs heavily on the choice i will make. shimano is a juggernaut, but i also just want the least bling/most performance combination possible. tough call.
I'd say you should also consider Gipiemme hubs, very comparable to the low flange DA, but IMO, nicer for less $$.

Alot of people consider Gipiemme to be Campy "copies" a la Zeus hubs and cranksets. They are pretty nice but definitely not machined as finely as Campy.

No one is trying to compare them to Campy. I'm comparing them to DA, as I personally believe them to be nicer hubs for less money.

Actually I have heard and read people describe Gipiemme as Campy copies several times and Zeus as well. I'm not making that idea up. Gipemme's design does seem to mimick Campy if you look at it. The low and high flange look like a copy of a Campy Record. Also like Campy Gipiemme is Italian, too, and usually has Italian threading, whereas DA is English threaded. I'm not trying to be a dick here. Just look up "Gipiemme Campy Copy" on google and the results will speak for themselves.

DA is a better hub than campy sr/nr, better seal, better alloy, better machining... wouldn't compare to anything gippieme ever made.

I agree, DA is my personal favorite. The only thing in the league of Dura Ace are the Campy Record Sheriff Star High flange hubs, Suntour Superb, and perhaps Suzue Promax NJS in my opinion. DA seems to me to stand above these other hubs.

You're not being a dick, you're missing the point though. Ink wanted opinions on the LF DA hubs, and I was just saying that if he liked those, he ought to check out the Gipiemmes, as they are similar in many ways. End of story. The fact that they are Italian, or similar to Campys, was not why I suggested checking them out. I suggest it because they are low flange track hubs with cup and cone style bearings, with similar styling to the ones he was asking about, for a good price.

Oh okay, but I don't think it is right to compare them to DA that was my point.

stop your arguing children, this aggressive dialogue doesn't help the original poster with his low flange DA hub question.

how about jacobs and erich zann bareknuckle box...if jacobs wins, i'll buy gipiemme, if erich zann wins, i'll buy DA

personally, i think that erich zann's lvl 99 wizard may have a slight advantage over jacobs' teletubbie, but perhaps we'll see an upset.

Yeah I agree, it looks like I have won this one. If you fight me you will lose valuable GP and HP. Plus fighting online is half of the fun of the internet. So stop being a child and telling us to stop, stupid.

Sorry if I seemed aggressive with any comments, I didn't see it so much as a fight and more like a dialogue.

Oh well.

now back to the dura ace's

i've ridden onetwentyeights front after a little hooptyha crash and it wasn't bad. i like phils more tho. but everyone has their opinion.
i have both DA and phils, my DA has seen much more abuse than the phils (i've had it longer) and it's held up just fine through 3 boston winters, riding every day. i don't think phils have that much of an advantage over the DA's in any of the categories you've listed, except maybe warranty, but since i haven't had to warranty mine, i can't really say. the other thing is, the DA's are user servicable, and if you don't service them, you void the warranty. i didn't repack mine for about 4 years and they're just fine, the warranty is voided, but i know how to repack them. i spend $20 on new cones and bearings and i'm set. that's about the same cost for shipping a set of phils to have them warrantied.

the phils are smooth, but definitely not as fast as the DAs.

both are high flange, 32h.
