Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Etymology: Etymology: San Francisco Bay Area, shortened perhaps from English dialect "hyperactive"; other sources cite a combination of "hype" and "fly." Popularized by E-40 and the Federation's song "Hyphy" (2004); first known use on record by Keak Da Sneak in 1998 (on "Cool," from his LP Sneakacidle).
1 : dangerous and irrational: CRAZY;
2 : amusingly eccentric; without inhibition: GOOFY
"They were getting hyphy up in the club Saturday night."
"We got hyphy in da parking lot after the club let out!"
"Dat ***** was trying to get hyphy cuz her friends was wit her"
"Them krazy ninjas in the Town were gettin hyphy with them Boys in Blue, the fools were scraping the Pigs."
"We stay hyphy, in our white tee, and our black jeans, and our Nikes"
"Them ninjas hella hyphy hangin out the doors in the scraper!"
"We got hella hyphy at the party last night!"
"After takin 2 40s to the dome i was straight Hyphy"

well, yeah, i know. i dont mean to generalize, i am mainly speaking for what is readily available for free via television and radio. i am smart enough to know that what gets transmitted via those outlets is not representative of "all" hip hop. i am just sayin -- whats getting played is pretty bad. theres good stuff too.

using my model (what is available on radio/tv), yeah: all punk has sucked since the early 80s.

i dont knock hiphop, i will bump nwa until the day i die, and i love e40 to death. i just feel a bit unnerved when i hear the kids wanting to get dumb, be ********, and act stupid... at least punk added the extra "break stuff" to the mix.

On that note we are goin to get mad intelligent*when I am in SF and maybe even fall in love with a scripper. As well as what I just stated we are also goin to talk about the current state of gangsta rap, because **** is still hott.

well, mainstream everything is bad... but, then again, if the kids don't hear the punk on the radio they might not get interested in the punk and perhaps dig a little deeper and find the real treasure hidden beneath all the muck. there are gems in punk and in rap, one just needs to sort of wade through the mire. i'm down with the radio as a means of stimulating the kids to look a bit closer at the thing. maybe they will get e40s older albums! that **** is the real loot.

this thread sucks...back to PDX in SF. But I still say everything the Neptunes produce is gold, like Slim Thug's album.

will the person coming from PDX to SF pick up some of those blinky heart shaped clip on lights from that cool historic toystore downtown? they used to have them there, and they are the best. they clip to the flap of a bag very well, or also to a jacket/sweatshirt. i'll happily pay double for two or three if at all possible. thanks!

are you talking about finnegan's/little finnegan's?

and i dunno if the radio does stimulate that much interest. maybe sometimes.

yeah thats the place!!! last i was there, they didn't have any. i've never seen a neater blinky bike light.

well, i dont know if radio stimulates interest much.. but if you think about it, no one really jumps straight into a super obscure band. one has to sort of be lead into it, taught into it. usually a kid will hear a band on the radio, go buy their album, figure out what other bands are similar, maybe uncover a few gems that aren't broadcast via mainstream media, and after awhile the kid will learn what good taste means. but it always starts with the most general and works its way down to the specific, ya know? same with books. a person starts (usually) with unshaped general tastes, they get whatever is readily available, then dig deeper and find more obscure titles and authors, and their taste grows and gets sharper and sharper. as a tool for discover and starting interests, mainstream is good. judging the actual quality of what is transmitted, well, then it's pretty shaky and quite bad.
