Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Can't say how all Vanilla's ride, but I'm absolutely crazy about how well mine rides. It was really strange to not do any fitting whatsoever before my first ride. And that first ride was a dream come true. I am completely sold on steel, fixed gears and custom frames. My road bike has not seen day light since November and I'm seriously considering dumping it for a custom something.

I really cannot begin to tell you how pumped I am everytime I ride the Vanilla. IMHO, it's perfection. And it looks great too.

and seriously, now more than ever i think we need to consider spending our money on american products. i don't think we've ever been at war with oregon. japan, on the other hand, well i don't think i have to say anymore.

sorry, i'm totally kidding and don't have an opinion on the bikes. they both seem great, and i just wanted to be an ass.

Mission Accomplished.

Actually, I laughed. After a brief head-scratching moment.

You should buy the Vanilla.

The person who should buy the Nagasawa? He or she would not ask this question.

We should go to war with Oregon. Anyone ever read "Ecotopia?"

I'd get the Nagasawa, both for form and function. Not knowing how either of them ride, and judging on look only, I'd say that the Nagasawa calmly states: "I am a nice bike" to people who know what nice bikes look like. The vanilla is an attention wh0re like a neutered male cat. If you put bulletproof cranks and crappy wheels and ratty-taped chop-flop bullhorns on a Nagasawa (not that you would), most people couldn't tell the difference between it and a much cheaper track bike. It looks nice to those who know.

Shannon duked it out with the best in the national series all season and exceeded everyone's expectations, including his own...I think.

Vanilla / S+M Rider Rhonda Mazza (pictured left) Took 4th in the national championship against the best women in the states. Rhonda is so focused and quietly persistent. She is really an inspiration to me.

Molly Cameron (first year Vanilla team rider) was also incredible this season. After brutalizing the local single speed field last season (no small feet) Molly decided it was time to step up and race with the A's. Well, Molly raced a few local a races, and then decided to jump right into the elite national series. These guys are fast. Many of them have been racing cross semiprofessionally, or professionally for 10 plus years. Molly consistently finished in the low teens and never backed down. I hear stories from Molly about racing in europe next season... I believe that Molly has the skill and talent to go all the way.

what i'd like to know is whether i'd go with a nagasawa road track or a true track frame, if i intended to take it around town more than to a track.

how can you say vanillas are only for taking pictures of?

have you ever ridden a vanilla?

sure, you can take pictures of them, but they also happen to be kickass bikes that ride better than anything else i've ridden.

plus, as was posted before, a Vanilla came in first at last years Masters Cyclocross National Championship.

unless you've ridden one, i wouldn't say they are for only taking pictures of.

From a few feet away, under a coat or two of chipped spray paint, they all look the same.

i havent ridden one, and i just wanted to make it clear that i didnt mean anything against vanilla. i just cant ride bikes that beautiful. im really hard on my stuff, and all my bikes are scratched and beat to hell. i would rather ride some used nagasawa than a shiny new custom vanilla. if i bought it, i would hang it on my wall so it never got dinged or scratched because thats how sexy i think they are. if they ride fine, great. i just wouldnt want it on my conscience that i made a beautiful bike ugly.

True, but I don't see a custom frame as being built for those other than the rider. They do get to benefit from seeing one every once in a while...
