Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I got this as a Christmas present, but I've read very little of it. It seems pretty cool so far.

The bicyclist is under attack from all directions - the streets are ragged, the air is poison, and the drivers are angry.
Sounds like another urban tough guy book. Still not sure why riding in an urban environment is supposed to be a big deal.

It's not. The description makes it seem that way, but it's very sensible and level-headed, even humorous sometimes. He simply explains the dangers present while cycling in an urban environment and explains practical ways to stay safe. He actually debunks a lot of misconceptions that lead people to think that urban cycling is so dangerous. If only more people read this book (especially non-cyclists), maybe there would be more cyclists out there and we'd all get more respect.

we had to choose a text around which to make our senior graphic design project. my friend chose excerpts from this book. it was pretty fun going out taking pictures of me almost getting hit by ******* drivers (you don't have to look very far to find them around here). I haven't read it all, but what I've seen seems pretty sensible and I agree, drivers should read more stuff like this.
