i lived in oregon for a year, and the day i was moving away i decided to give my bike away because i couldn't bring it with me. it was a 70s schwinn 3-speed that i bought for $50. i rode down towards campus to find one of the pan handlers who were inevitably hanging around spare-changin' the trustafarians. the first one i rode by asked for some spare change and i replied "sorry, i don't have any, but i'll give you this bike." he was definitely confused. i assured him repeatedly that it wasn't stolen and he wouldn't get arrested for riding it. after a few minutes he finally hopped on a rode off with a big smile and a wave. i've often wondered what became of that bike and sometimes worry that the guy did probably get arrested for riding the bike after assuring cops "seriously, someone just gave it to me!"

point of the story... sometimes you're in the right place at the right time, and not everything is stolen.

It may not have been stolen, but it sure was a steal.

Remember, if you don't jump up high in the air, with arms akimbo, yelling and laughing like a 5 year old girl hopped-up on sugar candy, than no matter how sweet the deal, you don't deserve it.

NO_Minkah: If someone claims the wheels, you could ask them what brand of innertube there is in them. The owner is likely to know.
Otherwise, congrats on a good deal.

Not stuff wino thieves tend to know about, in my opinion.

Check out the story about the Aluminum Trek. If that's true, it does add some validity to his story.

alanis morrisette is canadian too, and she has some things to say about irony.

4 bikes in a storage room, though...sounds like an operation.

eyefloater 05-09-06 07:53 AM

Jhnmrk, way to go and just speak the name of true evil without like, any forewarning.

Or, you know... storage.

onetwentyeight 05-09-06 09:46 AM

I havent the faintest idea which innertube i have in my bike right now. Good thing those arent my wheels. I know the rimtape brand though.

skelly 05-09-06 10:17 AM

Yeah I have no clue what tubes are in my wheels.

colinm 05-09-06 10:17 AM

Velox?

sloppy robot 05-09-06 12:11 PM

no idea on my tubes either..

i think youre all stolen article paranoid though...bikes and weird dudes go together like peanut butter and chocolate..go to a bike swap meet some time if you dont think so

hyperRevue 05-09-06 12:12 PM

A bike swap meet and sketchy dude on the street are two entirely different things.

they gotta be somewhere when theres no swap meet...besides.. the guy brought the buyer to the storage space.. if they were stolen.. wouldnt mr sketchy prob. go grab them and bring them back?

hyperRevue 05-09-06 12:24 PM

Haha, picturing swap meet people wandering the streets in their free time just looking for people to offer ridiculous deals to, moaning "muuuuuuuust seeeeeeeeeell biiiiiiiiike paaaaaarts."

Would Mr. Sketchy go and grab them? I dunno. There are a lot of things in this story that don't add up but the sketchiness definitely outweighs the legitimacy. I say they're in all liklihood stolen. I don't think the OP should do anything about it. Ride them and use them, if he/she sees a "Stolen Wheel" flyer or something, I think then is when he/she should step up.
