it's been a year since i quit and i always realize how much my riding has improved since then....
but still, from time to time i smoke the green, and once in a while i'm tempted to smoke cigs while drunk.
eating the ganj in food is so much better, and not smoking cigs is the bestest.
with the exception of the green, i haven't broken in a year, i guess that's good--right?

Good luck to everyone here who is trying to quit and congradulations to those that have had success at quitting. I'm still looking for that thing to click in my head. I know all the reasons and i know i want to quit. The last time i tried i almost lost my job. It's hard to be a horrible bear when you work in customer service. I'm haunted by the black lungs in the travelling Body Worlds exibit, and i've decided that even if i don't manage to successfully quit that i'll donate my body to Gunter Van Hagen and the Society for plastinization. That way my grizly remains may ward off others. The one cigarette, single worse decision i've ever made. For now i just try to click in as often as i can. The only time i can't find time/reason to smoke is when my wheels are spinning.

mad encouragement to everyone quitting. i found i felt so much better physically once i quit, and that had a certain, if not phenomenal, effect on my mental health.

OK...I've been wanting to quit for days now. I only had 4 cigs today...instead of my usual pack by this time. I think its time to go all the way.
I've been a non-smoker for 1 hour now...gotta start somewhere.
See you guys when I get home...should be 3 and a half hours from now.

OK...I never actually quit that day...but...this morning is looking real good. No cigs since 5pm yesterday...and I'm having morning coffee (sans cigs) without any probs so far. Had 2 really bad cravings yesterday...they passed in 2-3 minutes or so. If I can get through today...I think I'll be golden. Good thing I'm commuting this morning...even if it is halfway. Wish me luck.

True story: it's a little easier to quit here in Oz. Smokes are like US$7 for a pack of 'boros and these nifty pics kicked in 6 months ago so I quit. I can breathe without hitting a "wall' and have a new steed inbound from the savings.

I been off 'em for real for a little over 3 weeks. My wife is brewing twin boys in her belly, and I don't want the little dudes to be around it. Figured it's as good an excuse as any.
I have a little trick that might help some of you strugglers out. It sounds really stupid, but when I get the craving I just pull my fingers up like I'm taking a big old hotbox off a Red. I pretend I'm smoking. It works really well for me (be careful, it may look to others like you're sniffing your grubby fingers. This will not get you laid.)

What benefits did you guys notice overhow much time, in terms of endurance/strength etc.?
I've quit in the past, and I'm working on a half-pack a day instead of a full one in my former manner... just wondering how much difference will be noticeable over a week or three when I go cold turkey? (I bought a couple of cartons on vacation in Virginia, since they were $35 instead of $75 for American Spirits, but wish now that I hadn't, I guess.)
This, by the way, is a great thing about this part of these forums, you wouldn't find anyone sympathetic on the Road or Racing forums

I want to quit, but then some how I convince myself that it is helping me. Like when my girlfriend told me she didn't want to see me again a month ago, I started back heavily. I was cutting down because we both decided it would be best, so I went from 7 a day back to a pack.
There goes my money.

Stick with it man, it gets rough. I've quit 5 times now, the most recently (but not the longest) was end of may to begining of July...when i went to spain and i got nervous b/c of flying and then everyone was you know, smoking when i got there.... anywho keep it up.
Now that the nicotine is actually out of your system its just a mental battle you face, which is unfortunatly the hardest part.
Edit: Im working on quiting again, its gonna be a while when i don't have the stress of deadlines and tests and i can avoid the human race for a week as to avoid "flying off the handle" at the ones i truly care about over some insignificant sh*t

This is a good thread. Thanks to all who have posted. I am really trying to quit here. This is my second day of severely cutting down (4-5 a day instead of 25) and I really want to quit. It is nice to check in to BF and see this inspiration. When I ride hard and for a long time the only thing that hurts me is the lungs. My friend told me once, "the mind is a mother****er". He meant that we are capable of doing anything if we put our mind to it. Wise words.

i quit smoking last friday. not because the girlfriend always complained when i smelled of smoke, but i did it for the bike. now that my shoulder is healing and i can ride more i have a reason to be in shape, and there's no room for smoking. so far i'm going strong.

Good on you for doing it.
Two years ago, just before Thanksgiving, we lost my grandfather (mom's side) to emphysema. He had already had half a lung removed due to cancer, needed oxygen, and couldn't even walk across a parking lot. He had three brothers - all dead of lung cancer or emphysema, except for the one that didn't smoke. That one is in his 80s now, still a cranky Irishman, and has a successful business/hobby of making golf clubs.
My father lost his father when he was 12, cigarettes killed him.
My sister started smoking when she studied abroad this summer, and our entire family wanted to kill her.
I organized a quit smoking group at my job last year for some of my temps, every couple months we'd go out and I'd buy them a beer for every week they stayed off it. Had a tally board above my cube and everything.
I never started, so I can't empathize - just offer support.

a year and a half ago, after building my bike, i quit smoking for the bike. a few weeks after, i did my first "long" ride and was really, really proud of myself. and i never looked back and i can feel the difference every day and i'm just stupid proud that i quit smoking. good for you! keep it up!
