would it be wrong of me...?
so some girl named "Megan" (i don't know her personally, but i did talk to her on the phone today, as will come in later) is having a fixed gear built by an LBS in about the worst way possible. she brings in an old schwinn varsity frame she probably got for $5. the cranks are one piece and on top of that the freewheel is in the BB, not the rear hub (whaaaaa?) regardless of this, the main wrenchmonkey at the LBS says he will set her up. i'm not sure exactly what he told her, but he sold her on ordering a $85 soma hub to re-lace to her old back rim (piece of crap). along with this the back rim is 36 hole and the hub is 32... so she'll probably have to pay for a new rim, plus the spokes, plus the labor to put it all together, and even then she can't ride fixed because of the bottom bracket.
i find this out all today as i stop by regularly and the guy who set her up with all of this is gone for a month, another mechanic (newer guy) is trying to make heads and tails of what is supposed to go on here. when he notices the BB he decides he needs to call her, i offer to give up another crap schwinn frame with a regular (but still one piece) BB if she wants it... so i talk to her on the phone for a few minutes to see if she wants it, and she says sure.
but she's still, in the end, getting some sort of overpriced (IMO) wheel on a crappy bike, if the chainline even works, which isn't adjustable with a one-piece crank.
anyway, i feel like she's going to get screwed out of $$$ and end up with something she's not happy with... should i tell her that i think there are better ways to go fixed when she comes to pick up my frame, or should i just let the LBS do it's business? i think she'd be a lot happier with a 3-piece crank frame and a cheaper/pre-built wheel.

Dont want to see you let a good thing
Slip away
You know I dont like watching
Anybody make the same mistakes
I made
Shes a real nice girl
And shes always there for you
But a nice girl wouldnt tell you what you should do
Listen boy
Im sure that you think you got it all
Under control
You dont want somebody telling you
The way to stay in someones soul
Youre a big boy now
Youll never let her go
But thats just the kind of thing
She ought to know
Tell her about it
Tell her everything you feel
Give her every reason to accept
That youre for real
Tell her about it
Tell her all your crazy dreams
Let her know you need her
Let her know how much she means
Listen boy
Its not automatically a certain guarantee
To insure yourself
Youve got to provide communication constantly
When you love someone
Youre always insecure
And theres only one good way
To reassure
Tell her about it
Let her know how much you care
When she cant be with you
Tell her you wish you were there
Tell her about it
Every day before you leave
Pay her some attention
Give her something to believe
Cause now and then
Shell get to worrying
Just because you havent spoken
For so long
Though you may not have done anything
Will that be a consolation when shes gone
Listen boy
Its good information from a man
Whos made mistakes
Just a word or two that she gets from you
Could be the difference that it makes
Shes a trusting soul
Shes put her trust in you
But a girl like that wont tell you
What you should do
Tell her about it
Tell her everything you feel
Give her every reason
To accept that youre for real
Tell her about it
Tell her all your crazy dreams
Let her know you need her
Let her know how much she means
Tell her about it
Tell her how you feel right now
Tell her about it
The girl dont want to wait too long
You got to tell her about it
Tell her now and you wont go wrong
You got to tell her about it
Before it gets too late
You got to tell her about it
You know the girl dont want
To wait--you got to
Tell her about it

Then follow up with a 'instructional training ride' to a coffee joint / bar or
something.....
PS : I wouldn't badmouth the LBS or anything, tho'

I think you should tell her, but I'd be a little worried that she'd say something innocent to the LBS that would tip them off that you essentially took business away from them.

i'm actually moving (to baltimore) pretty quick here, so i wouldn't be able to build it for her, and i don't care if the LBS gets mad about business getting taken away... i just don't like that the @ssclown of a mechanic didn't think more in depth about what he was doing when he bought her a $90 hub for a bike it won't even work on... i'd rather it be his loss than hers.
