Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? This isnt about their hubs, but I'd like to point out that I've tacoed a Surly cog. They're cheap, but you get what you pay for.

ok, but was that because of the manufacturing? or some sweet user error? I want to hear the whole story on how it happened!

(and dont get me wrong, I'm a big fan of sweet user error!)

I will be building a set of Formula wheelset as soon as I get the hubs sometime this week. Not decided on rims yet.

Just built a wheel with Sun Swift SL1 rims, DT Comp spokes, and Formula hubs - hasn't been long enough to tell how they're holding up, but from what I can tell so far, they're the good****, not the bull****.

was it one of the older surly cogs or one of the newer style?

Regarding the Phil Wood warrantee,......it's basically worthless to someone like me who buys virtually everything used.

If you have enough faith in your product, a warrantee should follow the PRODUCT and not the owner. I believe Leupold scopes follow that policy, but most manufacturers wimp out to cover their azz. LL Bean is another company that has a lifetime warrantee on their clothing,....and NO receipts required. (although i'm not really happy with their (now) huge foreign manufactured items)

Anyway,...since Phil Woods has already collected their HUGE premium price on the original sale (which is suppost to cover some warrantee coverage of defective items),....it makes no rational sense to then not cover items sold or traded away.

Frankly, the item WAS bought new by someone who "had" a warrentee. The simple fact of a transfer should not disolve the maker from any warrantee for defects later showing up. This kind of stuff really frosts me.... :-(

BTW, i have a set of Surly hubs matched with Mavic Open Pro rims. The rear hub is a flip flop, and it works "OK". But both front and rear hubs are REALLY touchy to get adjusted. When you get all the side play out, there's way too much drag. So i've found you have to live with a bit of side play to get reasonably free spinning hubs.

I got them used at a decent price,...so i can live with it on my one fixie. But for sure until Surly gets a better product that is easier to adjust properly,....i won't be buying another set,....NEW or USED.
