nice. I thought about working a summer landscaping job with a friend of my dad, but I'm not to keen on manual labor.

My good friend did that for a long time. He also poured concrete. Pretty back-breaking work from what I understand. I admire that. Very beautiful!

@visitor:
cool. i made a similar thing for an installation once. it was a mixer that mixed 6 cassette tape loops of pre-recorded material. you could adjust the volume and pitch. basically it made a loping, off kilter, arhythmic, steve reichian drone that people in the gallery could play with. i changed the tapes every half hour or so.

I do mostly photography, but occasionally get the urge to other stuff as well. Most often this means mixed media stuff, but also some graphic design, temporary whatevers in alleys with chalk, etc. I absolutely love doing serigraphy, but don't have any means to do it right now, unfortunately. I don't actually have any good photos of my mixed media or screen prints, which I have no excuse for, but here's two random things from the last couple years. One is a random idea for a poster that ended up getting plastered all over campus at Ohio University, originally in a different typeface with the lower portion back-printed on vellum (top text printed on the 'front' of the paper). The other is me having fun with stickers. How many indie points do I get for a dead rat-based installation piece? :P

another film
i got a band i work with to give me a bunch of individual instrument tracks from unreleased songs. i cut them up and layered them to mix a track. then i chopped up a bunch of super-8 i shot of a photographer friend making his images on early-morning NYC streets (and on one street outside of the kunsthalle in vienna) over the course of 4 or so years. i tossed it all together and made this.

chris - i love that video way more than i dig any of his photos. i've always thought his stuff was interesting but haven't been that into it, but with that audio and shot on super-8 i really dig that video. really nice stuff while being a bit unsettling.

thanks. right after september 11th, that film was installed in a museum in the netherlands. the film/video curator called me and said that everyday, people just sat on the floor and watched it over and over again crying. the same thing happened a couple of months later at a museum in barcelona. it's funny how bodies in abnormally otherwise empty urban environments can be so unsettling. the combined events of history have an odd way of polluting the collective unconscious.

and OP - where's your stuff already? ;)

the process was a pain in the a** but well worth it... specially now that I understand it more... basically I made ceramic casts from bike parts I liked (after cleaning them) and cast it back in plaster, then cleaned and filed it till I was happy and then slumped glass over it..

here's another photo of a piece with a recycled cog in it... this type is really a pain in the a** bc glass and metal have different rates of expansion and contraction (ie: the heating up and cooling down thing can crack the glass - even make it explode off of the metal - if you're not *really* careful)...

I had heard that about metal and glass and was curious to hear how you made the glasscog. It was nice meeting you last night in LA!

i have a site with music and photography up. i used to play drums for the most part, but lately i started messing around with looping pedals, busted mics, broken cymbals...basically anything i find in the trash that i can make noise with while a friend of mine plays gtr.

I have this ongoing photo project to document (hopefully) all of the front-yard virgin mary statues and other religious icons that people have here in Somerville, Mass. I go street by street (on my bike of course) and keep track of where I've been on a map so I don't get any statues twice. Somerville is only four square miles, and I've covered about a third of it and am up to 196 pics. A few samples are here, and you can see the whole set here.

Oh, I suppose I should explain - usually, the statues are in little blue and white half shells like the one in the last picture. Sometimes, those are empty, and I get pictures of them too.

The buried-bathtub as altar is another Mass. classic. Saw a few of those in Attleboro when I lived there.
