Bearing It All

bearings...

i was chatting with this old cyclist telling me they are.. iunno.. i think he's crazy..

i destroyed the bearings in my rear wheel when my chain popped off and got lodged between my lockring and dropout while going down a hill.

Bikes: Old-ass gearie hardtail MTB, fix-converted Centurion LeMans commuter, SS hardtail monster MTB

Go to your LBS. They usually sell them for a nickel or a dime apiece, which makes it around $2 or $3 per wheel, max.

Steel, of course.

Bikes: some but not enough

How would that situation destory your bearings? Did it unscrew the locknut on the axle?

Do you have a hub with loose BB cup & cone or is it a cartridge bearing. Photon, Spud and Aero were referring to the former. But spud is being flipping spud ..... again.

Still super cheap. Look at the bearings you have, and check for the 4-digit number (probably begins with a 6) on the shield. There should be some sort of bearing supply for industrial stuff in your area. That 4-digit number is the size. The can cost anywhere from $1 to $20 per cartridge. Guess which ones are good enough for most folks?

yeah.. i think it said 7901... but it's the same dimensions as 6901s which i can apparently get at a local bearing dealy.. and it sounds like it's gonna be nearer to 20 smackers.

i was just worried..
that old guy told me i might as well get a whole new rear hub... and that put the fear of god in me.. as it's just a few months old.

To get a "phil" hub, just replace your bearings with phil cartridges.

Bikes: A couple customs and some beaters.

~$300-400 a wheelset if you want ceramic.
