Correct me if I'm wrong:

Two months quit smoking on July 15, and my prize is clipless pedals and shoes. I'm getting minnrets, but pedal choice is a bit trickier.

Let me know where I'm wrong below:

--eggbeater cleats click less than SPD cleats when walking

--spds are more durable

--eggbeaters will feel more like clip/straps as your foot will have play at the pedal

--spds are bad for your knees

--candy's are just like eggbeaters, except that they have only two sides and funky colors

--there is no such thing as a crank brothers pedal with a platform on one side for boots, etc

--time ATACs are just like eggbeaters, but two-sided

Thanks!

-- walk-clicking depends a lot more on the shoe than the cleat. I'd bet they click about the same.
-- true, but you can buy aftermarket crank bros. cleats that are more durable
-- WTF?
-- No knee problems for me?
-- basically, and there is more platform to push on, so less hot-spots
-- crank bros. do have the mallet pedal, which do have a large platform around the engagement mechanism. Could do for boots.

--eggbeater cleats click less than SPD cleats when walking

maybe, depends on how much it is recessed into the shoe sole.

--spds are more durable

I have not broken either (there are a lot of different SPD's)

--eggbeaters will feel more like clip/straps as your foot will have play at the pedal

both types have some float (play)

--spds are bad for your knees

not if adjusted properly and used with good shoes that fit you well.... same goes for eggs

--candy's are just like eggbeaters, except that they have only two sides and funky colors

no, candy's have the same 4 sided mechanism that rotates inside a 2 sided small platform that gives more bearing surface for your foot.

--there is no such thing as a crank brothers pedal with a platform on one side for boots, etc

not sure, maybe the mallett

--time ATACs are just like eggbeaters, but two-sided

haven't used them

Bikes: I built the Bianchi track bike back up today.

The mallet still has problems when you're riding without clips. The clip in mechanism sticks up a little bit above the pedal, so it's not quite like a platform. You can ride it, but it's kind of slippery...

So far I'm digging on the candys. Just the right amount of platform.

and...

Spend some time getting the right shoe. Don't make it a fashion decision. Go to a shop that does a lot of MTB business and is used to fitting MTB shoes. I bought a pair of $80 Shimano shoes and used them for a year with clips an' straps and they were just fine. Later on I mounted a set of cleats to use them with a pair of Shimano M520 pedals and they get a little uncomfortable after about 30 miles (no breaks, steady riding).
The Shimanos are quite comfortable to walk in. When I put a pair of Candy's on another bike, I had to get another pair of shoes and went to a good MTB shop and spent about an hour trying on shoes and asking questions.... came away with a slightly more expensive pair of Specialized shoes that are the ugliest shoes I have ever worn on a bike. They are also a little more uncomfortable to walk in but on the bike they are the best... no hot spots, no knee pain, comfortable all day, easy to clip in and out... just ugly.

I appreciate the advice of a man who is not afraid to be ugly, but I'm getting the minretts because they are somewhat muted and can be worn to work.

I've got the minnretts (going on about 4 months)and they are pretty nice so far but the insoles suck hard if you plan on walking/wearing them most of the day

Bikes: Lots. Mostly steel. Mostly heavy. Mostly geared, and very low, at that.

Personally I'm looking into Speedplay Frogs, as my knees are bad and the extra spring-free float will be very appreciated. I have enjoyed my TIME pedals a lot, and the vast majority of the messengers I discussed pedal choices with voted Time over everything else. Quite a few had used CB pedals for a few months and switched when they broke.

Treechunk: do you move your foot around during pedaling? Like, in every revolution?
I have never been able to understand why tf people are infatuated with float. I mean, if you set it up correctly in the first place, you don't need float. Well, I don't, anyway.

So, OP: no, SPDs are not bad for your knees. 5° float is enough if you set it up properly.

i use the sixsixone launch spd + eggbeater combo

I have no complaints at all with the beaters and the sixsixone launch look more like a non-cycling shoe than anything i have seen yet even more so that i took the velcro strap off. only neg about them is they are a bit heavy for wearing all day long at work or whatever but riding you don't notice the weight at all (and they are veg friendly no leather).

I've heard and seen that the frogs are quite fragile, but everyone who has them likes them, just something to keep in mind.

Bikes: don walker, redline, TBD

Time ATACs are the best ****ing goddamn pedal ever invented. Even the aluminum ones are great. Few moving parts, no screws to rust, they're amazing.

Bikes: lots

Knee problems come from impropper cleat position. I personally hate SPD's and love speedplays but, just like seats, and bars, clipless pedals are a personal choice.

I went with the atacs, largely based on everyone's recommendations, and because they seem sort of like a middle ground between eggbeaters and spds. I was leaning eggbeater, but then I couldn't mosy for beer runs and booty calls wearing sandals. The atacs have just a bit of substance, which is good. I would only have gotten candys if they came in brown.

Thanks for the tips.
