Unexpected week off
So a few months ago I was told I'm getting a raise and a promotion. A month and a half ago, I started doing the position, promised a hefty raise. Yesterday, they finally got everything through the corporate bullcrap and made me an offer.
It was basically nothing. I get a 10% shift differential, and I'd lose that with the new job. Supposedly, it would be a 17% increase, but that's only 7% when you figure that I can't actually do the new job on second shift. And the offer is ~$3-5 less than the going wage, and what I was led to believe I'd be making... And it wouldn't even be retroactive to when I started doing the work. Plus I should be getting about that much right now for the position I was doing (we just had our reviews, and the raises are supposed to be kicking in as of the 5th. THOSE will be retroactive because we still haven't gotten the details from corprate.) So today I told them that I couldn't accept the position, and would be taking next week off, then returning to my old position. Dumb, probably yeah (sorry, Keicker, your comment was too late to stop my brashness...) So anyone in Minneapolis that feels like hanging out and riding and/or drinking next week, I'm totally available. Unless they come up with a better offer when they see how many things there are that only I know. Anyways... |
good luck. hope they miss you. that'll possibly get you more from them.
|
They should. I called in hung over from the Bike Film Festival last friday and the shop ground to a halt in the digital color dept, so I have the feeling next week is going to be chaos down there...
|
ha ha...well, i'm sure you're prepared to pick up some pieces come next monday then, i'm sure.
|
i have no idea what any of what you wrote means, but either congratulations, or, oh, man, that sucks. whichever is applicable.

The ticket is just growing comfortable with the $9/hr lifestyle. If you can do that, everything will always be a-okay.
|
man, i've become comfortable with the minimum wage lifestyle. anything more, you get thankful for.
|
It was supposed to be going from the $16/hr lifestyle to the $22/hr lifestyle... I've spent the last hour or so chatting with a freind that also works down there, and she agrees that I went about things wrong. At this point, all I can do is wait and see.
Moral of the story - never send emails at work when you're pissed... |

++++++++++++ :lol: |
Um, it means the retro was supposed to be a new(maybe used but nice) touring bike, plus some upgrades for my fixies...
The rest of it means that I might have just shot myself in the foot with this company, and need to start over with a new one... |
Well, I'm not sure they'll like the "I hope your offer was a joke" bit and the "have fun" bit... But then what do I know. I guess they'll swallow it if your work is important to the company.
|
moral of the story is do not work a job that angers you
i once quit on the second morning when i realized the lady i was to work with was a total nightmare best decision/feeling ever |
I left 19.00 an hour in digital print-XEROX & NEXPRESS to come to 11.00 an
hour bindery work here in Vermont. The grass isnt always greener. Contriteness does wonders in these situations. Good luck and best wishes getting this stuff sorted. |
Jeremy,
Man, that kinda sucks about yr job. I remember the last time I saw you on Nicollet Mall during that race and you were so excited abt your new raise, sucks. I would definitely love to ride with u but I'm in Atlanta from the 12th to the 24th. And yes, it's really ****ing hot!!!! Will be moving here somewhere near the end of thr summer, and I'm just here now checking it out. |
how about taking a side trip to Chicago, huh? megabus.com will take you and your trusty steel steed here for a steal...

Hmm... Chicago could be fun... Is it any cooler over there than it is here? It's WAY too hot this week...
SamHouston - apparently the email that I sent probably ruined my chances. Oops. I'll find out when I get back, I guess. As far as I know, I was the only one that applied for the position, it was made just for me. I've been *****ing for awhile that they hadn't made things official and that I was getting ripped off doing the job without the raise. Careerwise, it's a no-brainer that the position would get me a lot more places, but I couldn't do it for what they were offering... In retrospect, I should have just said I needed a week to think about it. Oops. |
Wow, megabus is super cheap!
If I were to say, head over on wed and head back sun, who'd be able to give me a peice of floor and a blanket and something to do? Honestly, I'd love it if they called with another offer and I had to be like 'Sorry, I'm in another state, I can't come in...' Maybe I should leave on monday instead... |

Good Morning, I assume that the offer you made me yesterday was a joke. That was my initial impression after seeing it, and after reviewing the numbers, I can't accept it. The main sticking point for me is the shift differential. This 10% has been part of my wage as long as I've been with -----. The way I see it, my wage right now isn't $14.47/hr, it's $15.92. Since it would be nearly impossible for me to actually perform the duties of the new position on second shift, I would lose this. Figuring that into account, your offer is actually only a 6.7% increase. I was expecting a similar raise as an iGen operator. Which is another point - when I moved from B&W to color, I was told it was a lateral move and was not given a raise. So I feel that my current wage is actually quite low. I also know that the average wage for this position is $20-22/hr. I was expecting an offer in this range. If you were to bring in someone from outside the company, it's hard to believe that you would find anyone willing to do it for what you are offering me. And it's hard to believe that you would find anyone who would know as much about setting up jobs for our machines and clients. For the last month and a half, I have been working in this position on the good faith that I would be made a reasonable offer, in a timely manner. During that time, I feel I have been unfairly compensated for the work that I have been doing. In the first two weeks alone, that's $300 I lost, if you use the offer you made me. If you look at the going wage for this position, it's a lot more. IF you can actually make me an offer that is acceptable, I'd like for it to be retroactive to June 5th, when I started doing this work. Otherwise, I have no choice but to return to my position as a second shift iGen operator. I will be taking next week off, during which time hopefully you can come up with a better offer. Thanks, but no thanks, hereNT |

So, after hearing that things are kind of bad down there, and that I might not have, or might not want my job after returning, I've been exploring some other options. I posted my resume on an industry specific board last night, and already got a VM from a national headhunter, wanting to know more about my skills and what I'm looking for in a job...
I haven't heard back yet from the places I actually emailed my resume to, but it seems like a pretty good sign, right? |
I don't know anything about the industry, but it sounds to me that the email you sent, while harsh, was appropriate. if no-one outside the company would take the position at the rate they offered, you had the right to protest, and protest strongly. and if you've already heard sounds from competitors, you can reasonably expect to find a similar job at an appropriate salary elsewhere. I agree with what's been said: don't work a job you hate or that treats you like nothing just because you feel you must. you clearly have skills and other opportunities. seize them. you don't need to take crap from them.
|
So the lady sounded really eager to talk to me, and I have an interview tomorrow. Said that she'd seen my resume all over and had several people forward it to her and say 'You NEED to talk to this guy!'
Hopefully being a bike commuter isn't too much of an issue. A lot of print shops are out in the middle of nowhere, without even much for bus service. Odd to think I might have to move to the suburbs to be closer to work... |
why aren;t you here yet?
