Ah, i think if they wanted to they could have made it look real. the design looks intentional to me.

Has anyone ever done it on their bike. This picture leads me to beleive it's easier than I ever thought?

simple312 07-24-06 09:33 AM

why are two people attempting to ride the same bike?

WakeUpOnFire 07-24-06 09:39 AM

Ok, I never said I was pissed off about this. I was in the mall yesterday, and saw a poster-sized version of the ad, and last night idly browsed the AE website to see if it was reproduced there. I think its an amusing barometer of perceived "hipness" of fixies/urban bike culture, and is therefore an interesting cultural artifact that would be of relevance to this forum. I never said it was a bad thing, nor did I in fact pass any judgement on it.

Fg/SS wont catch on with younger people [13, 14, 15, 16] Whenever I am riding around school or wherever, I get bad remarks about my bike. Now if that ad was about a bmx, watch out!

I had a long conversation with a 13 year old boy about fixies last Friday. He was sitting with his dirt jumper, and I was about to get on my Soma outside the video store. He asked me "is that a fixed gear", and we had a long conversation about bikes from there. Neither of us was sure how to pronounce Masi. In other words don't make presumptions about people because of age. With a bit of luck every 13 year old grows up to be a 30 year old. Inevitably their taste in bikes changes a bit over time. When I was 13 I didn't know what a fixed gear was.

anyone wanna go etch "BIKE CULTURE IS NOT FOR SALE" on the windows at american eagle tonight?!?

SingleSpeeDemon 07-24-06 10:19 AM

I'm too old to shop at AE let alone vandalise their property. Bummer.

Nah...it's too dangerous. Of course, I fall asleep immediately after climax.

The world needs more hot girls on bikes.

I'm cool with that ad, simply for that reason.

i work at AE (it's a summer job where i get paid to talk to cute girls and fold clothes...you'd take it too) and would love to see that happen sometime, haha. sad thing is, the people i work with wouldn't get the message.

i'm glad someone else noticed this ad because i have caught myself staring at the jean guide while chillin in the dressing rooms looking at that picture trying to figure out what kinda stuff is on that bike. they do a good job of positioning the models just oh-so-right so you can't see ****.

SingleSpeeDemon- i see old folks in AE quite frequently....and i'm talking 50+ old. they always come in looking for the most random things and never find what they want, grumbling and shuffling out of the store as our greeter yells out "have a great day!" in their most forced-enthusiasm tone of voice.

Davidnssbm 07-24-06 11:27 AM

I'm waiting for fixed gears to appear in shows, movies or television. hipsters too for that matter. seems movies have all types of cultures, but i havent seen hipsters yet.

Once I was riding somewhere and this driver (20 or so) meekly said "Get on the sidewalk" and then we argued a little and he seemed very afraid of the confrontation. Anyway, when the light turned green, the kid (his brother or something? Maybe 10 years old) in the backseat rolled down the window and was like "Dude that's a sweet ass bike!".

rodny71 07-24-06 11:58 AM

i just stepped outside for lunch and saw a chase manhattan advertisement showin a dread messenger! freaky!

It's too bad we don't see more hot girls actually riding bikes. Yeah, this girl is technically [I]on[I] the bike, but she's not really on the bike, if you know what I mean.

Who's selling and who's buying? Who owns "bike culture"? How much does it cost? How much is is worth? Define "Bike Culture" - Road, MT, Hipster, SS / Fixed, Utility, Messenger, Ice Cream Wagon, Old People Trikes, Bike Path Hybrids? Would anyone even care if you did this? Certainly the message you are sending would get heard all the way up the corporate ladder, and then they'd change their ads, maybe to cars or SUVs, and then more people would think cars or SUVs are cool. Then you could b$tch more that there are so many cars / SUVs on the road and not enough room / respect for cyclists.

SS / Fixed seems pretty darned elitist to me, tied with the weight weenie roadie hammer fest guys. Do you own bike culture?

Adverts appropriate everything. It would be nice if they didn't, but I'm sure some dude who knows some guy who road a bike came up with that ad, and though it "hot". Then burned it to CD and maybe had a messenger deliver it to the corporate big wigs.

Why does this culture thing come up in SS / Fixed every week or so?

because people like to have vague, emotionally driven arguments with anonymous strangers:rolleyes:

i wish i was carrying girls around on my bike like that.

thanks. that explains things. :D

honestly, the architecture used in the backround is completely incongruous with the sexually charged fashion statement the foreground of the advertisement is conveying. Wangster is an architect. I would assume the only reason he has not yet commented on the egregiousness of this appropriation is that he is so furious he is at a loss for words.

seriously.

shut

up.

I don't think he was being serious. A while back some "trendy shop" had some tall bikes in the window and someone etched their windows with that and I think brunning was just mocking that situation.

ok, thread over.

sprintcarblue 07-24-06 01:42 PM

OH MAN! best ever, AE had a deal where if you tried on their pants you could get free movie tickets. My lady friend and I got four tickets going to different stores. <3 AE.
