Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? i was there last weekend.
due to incredibly low cash flow I was unable to bring my bicycle (a mistake I will NOT make on my upcoming nyc trip) and all I can say is this: the muni is ****ing WACK.

actually, I had an amazing time drinking in dolores park in the afternoon on a thursday and hiking to the top of bernal to hang out with dogs and take in the view on a sunny sunday, and all that other visiting-from-out-of-town crap.

I definitely saw my share of junkies roaming, but was downright shocked that I was only panhandled maybe a half dozen times over four days of walking everywhere.
portland has mad junkies too, and these ones want my money.

never had a problem with the local rat-birds though.

that would be dope. the whole point of this trip is to do some urban exploration.
every other time Ive gone there it's been really scheduled or busy and the city I've seen is just what happened to be near where I was going.
I'll pm you as it gets closer.

Jumped twice (skins and lower haight project types), robbed @gunpoint in the Western Add., countless psycho bum freakouts, and I can't even begin to talk about the s h i t I witnessed/particiated in 5 years working the bar at Treat St, let alone the ten years I slung booze at the Elbo Room. Fuggin City is a madhouse.

after living in bed-stuy for four years, and on the corner of 26th and s. van ness for six months, i wil say without hesitation that s.f. was/is way more gnarly. no unprovoked machete attacks at my bodega in b'klyn.

I spied an unsheathed hypodermic at a bus stop last time I was in Portland. Kicked it into a storm drain so nobody would, um, step on it. Then thought "****, I hope this doesn't drain to the river!"

i wish i would have known about lower haight projects. I ended up walking through there on saturday on my way to the tenderloin to see snakes on a plane.

you know it's awesome when you get way sketched out on a weekend afternoon in brilliant sunlight.

it was then that I decided to get on the muni which was, honestly, not that much better.

The Lower Haight has been sorta the unsung effed-up, get stabbed, get shot, get beat up for no reason stumbling home from the Mad Dog neighborhood since way back when. Virtually untouched by the whole dot com boom (which wiped out a bunch of other "soulful" spots), it's still as treacherous as it ever was. Avoid.

it was the only part of the city where I saw multiple "for rent" signs.

Also, the projects I'm talking about have been torn down for some years. Those are townhouses (free, brand new houses built for dirtbags to deal drugs out of in comfort in the most expensive city west of the Miss.) Glad to hear that visitors from out of town are still terrified walking through there in broad daylight. Sf --"Keeping it Real".

Yeah! The Triangle! Before there was a name for that neighborhood we called it the Upper Safeway. I lived @ 20 Sanchez for 5 years and yes, gay to the left, (clean streets, little dogs, fancy rainbows), scuz to the right (the LH).
Totally central to everything. Mission bars/food, Amoeba, Market corridor/downtown, Castro, panhandle. I kinda miss it.
