that's kind of berkeley/oakland/emeryville
you're near kitty's bar huh? I moved right before it opened up...
That area isn't too bad. check out the thirties on mlk (aka dirty thirties)... actually, don't. stay away from there. if you're going through west oakland or anywhere near the thirties look out for gangs of kids that blockade the road and push you off your bike. Riding along main streets worked for me for 3 years.
oh, and enjoy oakland. i miss it and can't wait until i can move back.

regarding lower haight's lack of awesomness: so I just looked at a map and now realize that the zone I got all sketched out in probably isnt considered lower haight.
it was at laguna and o'farrell that the third random tweaker convinced me that the muni would be a good escape route.
also, it should be noted. minding your own biz in gritty neighborhoods rarely works the same for women as it does for men.
especially when you're on foot.
crackheads and weirdos aside, I love san francisco, stayed the whole weekend in the mission and felt totally ok personal safety-wise aside from that one incident.

I haven't been to kitty's. I generally stay between 40th and albany but have taken some late night rides to downtown oakland (staying solidly on main streets). If all else fails, my fahgettaboudit chain is heavy enough to hurt someone.

Try surfing in SF. I LOVE when kooks from elsewhere come here thinking they can 'tame' Ocean Beach. IF the waves and rip don't get you... pissed off, cold surfers in the line up will. The message is simple... Stay on the fu(king beach.

Yes, because bad things only happen to bad people. Take the case of all the poor fugs (including a dead cyclist) mowed down by some psycopath. Probably drug dealers, every one of them.

ya, i heard kitties was pricy and a little bourgeoisie but it's blocks from sxefxc.
my favorite bars in oakland:
biggums silverlion
biggums silverlion
and biggums silverlion (They sell 22oz budweiser there aka Big ass)
koryo sushi is just up the street from there and they're open late and lanesplitters pizza is next door.
other than biggums, i used to frequent the stork to see bands, (less frequently) kerry house (piedmont), Ivy room (berkeley/albany) sadly i never went to hotsie totsies (which looked amazing),Kay's, ruby room, and the golden bull.
but the best thing about oakland are the art openings, warehouse shows, parties AND THE COMMUNITY.
i heard the mile high club is back in action!
oh and acme bar has $1 olympia night. Can't remember if its tuesday wednesday or thursday.

I really dig koryo, especially their hours (open super late). And I occasionally do lane splitters (pretty good deal on a pint and 2 slices). When I want to check out live music, it's Gilman for me as it's right down the street. as for biggums, i'll have to check it out.
