BS. The "culture" comment only applies to phils and unmachined Deep-V's; phils colored to match the frame and tires, with frame accent color matching the rims, saddle, and grips/tape. This is gospel.

i've seen some of your bikes rocking promax and dura ace - why'd you go phil for this wheelset?

sers -- this build (i will eventually take some decent photos) is for my everyday, all-weather ride. the frame is a 1974 gitane super pista track frame. something pretty nice (all 531, campagnolo ends) but nothing that will make me cry if i **** it up a bit. i wanted some hubs that i didn't have to constantly keep an eye on for grit, etc.. that i didn't have to repack everytime i ride them in garbage weather. i have sets of DA and Loose Promax hubs that are the ****ing pajamas, but that I wouldn't want to slam through the salted winter streets.

If I wanted a bling wheelset for the street, it'd be low-lange DA hubs, 2-1,5-2 DTs or bladed spokes and Mavic CXP33s. (Well, real bling would be Lightweigths, preferably with their new low-profile rim, but it's not even fun to dream about that...)

Incidentally, I don't really want a bling wheelset at all. I want a disc hub with a bolted-on cog. Wanna strip on me? You wont, b!tch! Ha! I think I'll build it within a month, too. Rim will be a Mach1 CFX to match the front, probably skinny spokes.

unfortunately, i don't think that there is really any option better than phil for an all-weather "track" wheelset. it's not worth it to me to thrash my double-sided pristine high flange da hubs in winter salt and filth. they simply are not made with such riding in mind.

totally understandable. that's why i'm building up a commuter/bad weather bike out of an old schwinn. i commute solely on my bike, the salt and sand was rough on my bike - it obliterated the stock fsa headset, despite my best efforts.

however, for a nice weather bike, i would probably rock da's.

Bottom brackets teach us many useful things. Such as, Campy goes with Campy. Campy doesn't go with Suntour it doesn't go with Suzue and it doesn't go with Dura Ace. I'm an old purist grouch though. To each his own. Let the Phil-***-fest continue.

Why no love for the Phil Woods hubs? I wouldn't kick'em out of bed.

i really dislike the SLR crap, but my main gripe with the aesthetics of phils is the way that there isn't much of a curve from the hub body into the flange. they look so damn boxy -- like old three piece hubs.

other--I'd love to build a street fixie with a Zipp track rear and a standard carbon braked front wheel.

There's probably an engineering reason for this. Lighter weight with more strength. That kind of thing. I just checked out the steinwerks hubs and they look awesome. I can't find a price though...

you are aware that zipp track hubs run upwards of $450 a pair. this puts them out of the context of this poll.

i personally don't think that those hubs should ever see the street.

phil are definitely not very light.

The shape of the Phils is definitely not engineered for weight/stiffness ratio or some such. More like "let's make it square and industrial-looking like a barn door or a hammer so it looks tuff" Not that there's too much wrong with that.
