Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? ^^^ I absolutely LOATHE that hairstyle. I want to laugh hysterically every time I see one, I expect to see a bird fly out or something.

Back on topic, you could always cut out the middleman and stop by Whole Foods on University and load up on food.

I think most of the vegan friendly spots have been touched on, so I'm not going to beat the dead horse.

How bout' coffee shops? There is PEETS on University, The Living Room on University, Pannikin Downtown on "G" street, I dont recall the name, but on the corner of Washington and India is a cool little coffee spot, (also a block down on the same side of the street is a mexican food spot called El Indio, not vegan but damn good!), Influx on Broadway. If I think of anything else i'll post it up.

Have a great time when you get here!

POKEZ is the best overall FOR SURE , NO DOUBT!!!

I see a lot of Fixie riders, but we haven't.. banded together.. which kind of sucks. I'm waiting for CM to settle down into a better group ~ they fight to much amongst themselves right now for my taste.

But, as a whole, we should make a standard meet up spot and do those things that fixie riders do.

CM hasn't been too bad lately. . . but i agree the arguments are always lame. the good thing is that MORE people are riding w/ CM nowadays. thats always a plus. i'll be there for sure!

I totally agree me and K3nho have witnessed first hand how "politics" of CM can get heated and so stupid and pointless.
Now instead of listening to them just ride away and ignore them and others will follow and start riding away from the lame fighting
But I agree on a fixie riding group for SAN Diego...and we should start up more alleycat races instead of these "only hip people can come" and only invite real riders bullsh.it events that these san diego ellitest riders have.
BS
I want to do a free for all fun alley cat events and I think I may have something in mind and am going to see if it is feasible. More on that later

I'll keep an eye out.
I have heard the courriers here are keeping the Alleycats under the radar for two reasons: one because of the po-po.. and two because.. they want to keep it to themselves. Not sure how true either are, but.. you know... I'm not concerned either way.

Set something up, and if I"m in town, I'll put cash in towards a grandprize type of deal. Nothing big $$ but something to make the ride a little faster.

The last time I went was when the 4 runner hit one guy and then hopped the median and we gave chase. Between that, work and the latest round of online fighting amongst those that would "control" CM.. I wimped out and quit going. I'm all up for rides just for the sake of riding. As they say, where ever two gather in the name... there will be a race for fame...

How many folks typically show up for SD CM these days? Last I went there were about 20 of us, and it was whole lot of fun. Everyone knew everybody else and there was no bickering or scrambling to escape the cops (like in NY), just lots of wonderful silliness. Damn, now I'm really getting nostalgic.

Next time I'm in SD I'm definitely going to borrow a bike, and if any of you wanna ride, I'm down.

When Charlie Darling was there.. it was pretty cool. I remember one time doing circles in the plaza between the Horton Shopping center and the NBC 7/39 building. I'll be back eventually.

I should also say I'm trying to create a San Diego Forum/web site. Not to draw away from Joe's place here, but to have a San Diego centric meet up forum so we can plan and do things. Threads get burried to fast here and frankly, sometimes this place may scare away otherso. HereNT is going to get back to me and let me know how to create one like the SF/Chitown/MNPLS ones.

All that matters is you like the bike you ride. A bike has nothing to do with manhood, though, that's not what some think...

I was in downtown whent the last CM rolled through, and they went up 4th (I think) and turned on to University (or was it the street before?).

It seemed like a pretty cool vibe, but the guy 'blocking traffic' at the light basically planted himself right in front of the cars - about a foot from the front bumper - and turned right to face them. He had a really aggressive stance. He looked young, maybe 20, and had a big curly afro. He didn't have a 'thanks for waiting' sign, handouts, or any of the stuff I've seen from the SF Critical Mass documentary.

Anyway, some folks in the restaurant muttered. One said 'yeah, they just ride around and block traffic.' A few scoffed. Everyone else was curious.

I wonder if CM really does any good here.

back on track (disclaimer: I moved about 3 years back, so who knows if these places are still there)

near el cajon blvd: if you want to rock a good trifecta, do the vietnamese non-veganism at Dao Son, sing with Shirley and swig the gimlets across the street at the Red Fox room, and then stumble down the block to go hang with the shamu rockers and drink their many many beers (now prob. all converted to PBR) at Livewire. The last is part owned by Petey X from RFTC and maybe another band member (it's been awhile), so its like a shamu rock motherlode.

The Che is on campus at UCSD--used to serve all-you-can-eats on Weds; UCSD also has Porter's--your typical run of the mill pubby pub, but good beers. Also, Pizza Port has pretty good suds and pizza, again, non-vegan.

Some of the mexican places sport vegan stuff if you hunt for it--as long as you can ignore the ubiquitous lard in the beans (hate to break that to you, principled non-meat eating folks)--potato rolled tacos at Lalo's are awesome; and the nopales, papas, y frijoles steamed tacos are frickin great at this little place in banker's hill.

I must agree: DC sucks for food (except for skin-on half-smokes)

realistically, nobody's gonna smile and wave and hand out flyers at every intersection they block. (sorry if this comes off rude, thats not my intent)some people get pissed, some wave at and applaud us, others ask what the ride is for and when/where we meet so they can come along. . . regardless of whether CM "does any good here," i just go because its fun, and you should too!

well, might as well stick a plug in here

last fri of every month, 7pm, balboa park, big fountain by reuben fleet science center (end of el prado street). TONIGHT! bring friends!
